Typically a quench hardens the steel.

Which is what I intuitively suspected, and was/has been my desired effect.

when creating chisels and such on my forge for stone work, I quench in used motor oil, in degrees watching the color of the steel as it cools and quenching at certain color/temp points.

I've recently been doing something similar... immediately after welding, I'd plunge it into cool water; then I'd set it in the fire in a firepit, let it get nice and hot, plunge it in used motor oil, stick it back in the fire, let it get nice and hot, then plunge it back in the water. Has been resulting in a beautiful patina.

Elliot, that's one of those opportunities that had I come across it, I would have pounced on even though I don't have a 220 line in my shop. I'd make damn sure to put one in as a priority.

Around the time I expressed my 'appreciation' for your compressor score, I had been cruising craigslist for a few things. I found something I've been looking for, at an almost too-good-to-be-true price. The listing was 7 hours old; surely it had been spoken for.
Apparently not. I've just finished talking to the guy and he said that he's had a number of calls on it but something about my original message tells him that this is where this item needs to go. I am going to meet him at his office tomorrow morning, cash in hand, tools in car... if this comes to fruition, I'm gonna have my own Elliot-stylee score to report, with much cackling and rubbing of hands. Stay tuned...

Way late for me... Took Grandfather to the VA Monday all day.. The ball in his hip is shaped more like a football... Home with pills.. See more doctors..

This afternoon he calls and his right eye went blind 100%.. Back to portland in rush hour traffic..Got him there in an hour..Five doctors checked him out..5 hour in ER.
Then he stated seeing some light.. Home with pills.. He will see two doctors tomorrow.. Another 150 miles.. His grandson is putting him to bed right now.. Cat is pacing and nagging for me to go to bed.
