any botanists out there? I'm still confused by the seeming alive "stumps" I found, cedar trees, cut down many years ago, that have no limbs, center is rotted out, but, the outer layer is alive and has even "healed" some over the exposed cut.....I don't see how this is possible.

Morning, YG, Lucky and all you lurkers out there. Eventful week for me. On Wednesday I had an angioplasty to clear a 90% blocked artery. In the hospital at 6 AM and home by 6 PM. Up and about an feeling fine on Thursday with the pre procedure symptoms all gone. Really a remarkable procedure. Plan to resume playing tennis this weekend. The Phoenix arises once more.

Take it from me .... Carpe Diem!!

Good news, Marty!

Ygmir, a tree may not need its' center to live... redwood "chimney" trees exist. If you cut a ring through it's outer layers though, it will die.

Three little file cabinets looking for their next home today. Although they have not been locked, never have had keys, salvation army called them "non operating" and would not take them. Debating whether to knock the locks out before I take them to Goodwill. But I have the dump address too.

It is against the law in parks to chain a dog to a tree.. If the bark is cut all the way around a tree the tree will die.. The limbs and leaf are feed by the shin just under the bark.. So the roots could feed that skin under the bark of a stump.. I have to kill squirrel planted walnut trees all over the place.. I skin back the bark at the stump and apply stump killer.. Then put a bucket over it to stop the sunlight..

Oh shit, I've been doing it wrong lo these many years. I always thought it was illegal to chain a tree to a dog.

Look inside, next to the lock cylinder, and see if you can identify the link that pulls the locking bar up and down. Bend and remove. Now the cabinet can never be inadvertently locked.
If you inadvertently lock one while experimenting, a putty knife next to the lock may be all it takes to push the offending bit of steel out of the way.
I use file cabinets to store bicycle parts and such.

Not a bottanist but I know willow and alder will grow back. A trail cut through a willow patch will disappear in a few years from regrowth from the stumps.
Turns out "coppicing" is a term for growing new trees from stumps.

yeah, that's just it:
there is no growth from the stumps. no limbs, or anything. just live wood, healed bark. like it's getting food and whatever without photosynthesis? Good fertile soil there, plenty of water, but still...........

I hope I didn't kill them, by removing the ivy that has has them covered, these decades.

Are there other cedar trees nearby? I know aspens form colonies not from seeds, but from the roots of a parent tree. They can be 100 feet from the parent tree but share the same root system.

HI V.C.!!!
yeah there are huge cedars all around.......but cedars grow from seeds. I see what you're getting at, though. I wonder if somehow the roots married up such that it works?
I'm wondering, if uncovering them will either kill, or allow them to grow new shoots.

Oh Marty so glad all went well for you !

My Mom said it hurt too much to be worth it...

I was attempting to restore life to a cherry tree stump..it did not work.

and I am attempting to visualize the slingshot concept with no success
who is operating the sling ? Figgy ?
who is in the sling ? Yggy ?

Hey, LCN!! how's things?
Thought of you today, I had to build up steel to make a new end on a tire machine part, sort of remembering, something from a forging lesson at some time: as I added layers, I hit them a lot with a hammer, to shape, and "vibrate" the steel........I seem to remember from somewhere the vibration as the metal cools make is tough or hard?
I added layer up on later to get the shape, hammered, so hardly had to grind at all.........
Thoughts?

Hi UJH!!
gettin some rain up there?

*sets out single malt*
It helps to relieve internal stress and make it less brittle and less possibility of stress cracking. So it's sort of like toughness.

Good morning, bar mates!

Finished decompressing after my lovely vacation. The week sucked, but this morning I made greek chili for the tailgate tomorrow and put a batch of Foxfur's pickled quail eggs in the fridge.

Cooking makes me feel better.

Hello Dear All !

Just came home from thrift store where I searched for a new "everything I need in one place with carabiners" purse to sing over my shoulder.
Yes, I found one.
Now I can get the new bigger iphone 6.

Enjoy your day !

Finally got off my duff and blew out the sprinklers this morning. Made more progress on building a new vanity for the bathroom. Got some other stuff moved forward as well. Spent the morning fine-tuning my new bad-ass sewing machine. Trying to get as much stuff done, outside, that I can, ASAP 'cause we're due for the first snow of the season around Monday. Hence, the sprinklers were first on the list, after coffee. Gonna get some supplies and get busy learning that new machine next week since we'll be in snow.

Oh, and a few minutes ago, I discovered that the pneumatic paint shaker I picked up at the salvage yard earlier this week, for $15, is $547 brand-new.
