Thanks for the repairs. The last thread I was active in lost two pages of entries from yesterday (11-16-04) afternoon.

Will those missing pages be able to restored?

Hi Everyone-
We suffered a catastrophic server failure at about 5:30pm Tuesday night. Spanky and Ra have put another machine in place and have restored some basic services, including most of the web site, the image gallery, and the e-playa. There may still be glitches in the services that are up, but we're on the road to recovery.
They had to restore from our previous night's backup, which happened at about 2:00am Tues morning, so any changes to any files that happened on Tuesday were lost.
This means we lost all the new topics and posts between 2am Tues and 4:30 am Wed, when they were able to get a replacement server up. We deeply regret the loss of dialogue.
Big thanks to Spanky & Ra for staying up all night dealing with this.
that was Technopatra in the announcements thread.
Seriously, though, it's kinda funny. we create art that's meant to be temporary and a city which burns after a matter of days.
i think it's ok for our conversational art to be ephemeral every now and again, too.
YAY ADMINS!!!

I am afraid not. The whole server went kaput, so all we had left was the backup. If the data on the dead server is recoverable at all, by the time it gets recovered all the threads will have moved on, and I'm not sure how we could add them back in without overwriting everything that's been posted since.
Bummer for us, esp when there is no one to blame. Stupid server.
On a personal note, I am especially saddened by the loss of the discussion around the "we have a dream" petition, which I thought was terrifically engaging. Sigh.

Thanks Spanky, Ra, and TechnoPatra for your successful efforts. In my experience, your technology has been more reliable than most.
Cheers!

You are totally welcome. Thanks for the drink!
Thanks for your kind words everyone! We're still not at 100%, but we're definitely into the "loose ends" part.
Unfortunately posts missing from 2:00 PST 11/16/2004 will not be restored. We may increase the databse backup frequency to twice a day, depending on the perceived load increase on the server.
Take care and we'll see each other at next year's on-playa Meet-n-Greet!

I think you should stop worrying about lost posts and UPGRADE THE SOFTWARE (available as a FREE download) and get a new SERVER so that the chances of this happening again are greatly reduced. Three day outage? Get real.

I think this went down on Sunday night. It would have been the "right thing" to post a message on the home page of BM to let people know what was happening. For one on the most imaginative groups in the world, this was far from it.
This would have been a 4-5 day outage.
I really hope someone can relay what the problem was with the server.

Re: ePlaya is back!
Nice improvements in the latest upgrade, I'd give it three out of five insipid smilies.
