I still say no chance. Look at http://www.usgs.gov, and you might learn something about real hazards. And the DATA that backs up predictions. Anything else than that, you're just blowing hot air and wasting the oxygen supply.

In fact, I've had more than a little experience with it. Ever heard of Iben Browning? He was a climatologist who predicted that the New Madrid seismic zone, out here in southeast Missouri was going to rupture and cause a 'great earthquake'. When the big day came, nothing happened. Still, it was interesting to see why Iben thought what he did. Iben was correaating the potential for seismicity with the lunar perigee (closest point that Earth and moon are, as the moon orbits the earth). By coincidence, lunar perigee also happened when Mt. St. Helens had its earthquake swarms. Iben believed that what he did was right and spoke up. However, there was no link ever established between lunar perigee and quake swarms or volcanic potential.
Have I ever given a forecast? Just once, and I'd do it again if it were really necessary. I told management that rockfall in a particular road would occur within the year if action wasn't taken. Sure enough, three weeks later on a Sunday night, they had a rockslide into the road. On Monday morning when I reported to work I was told that I would be the technical contact for the fix. Open your mouth ONCE, and they saddle you with running the job. We cut back the slope (plenty of right of way to do it, luckily) and benched the cut. I was proud of both the design staff and the construction crews, and said so. The designers had plans ready for bid in 11 hours flat. The construction crews did a good job. Sure enough, the local paper got hold of my quotes, and put them on the front page. The following morning I heard kudos from the very highest levels of management, on what I had said.

Re: PANIC!! Button of DOOOOOM!
Simon, look who it stars, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. I can SMELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL what The Rock has done and made a real stinker of a movie. Full of gloom and doom. It reminds me of that film produced by Asylum Films, "Megafault". Films like these are great when it comes to the wizardry of special effects, but their storyline is FAR from the truth.
I have never yet seen an earthquake movie that approaches the reality of the truth, other than a documentary or two. Even a SERIES of earthquakes couldn't produce the damage depicted in this short clip. AND, if a series of earthquakes struck, it would be over the course of years, maybe even tens of years.
Ever heard of Amos Nur, from Stanford U.? Nur came up with exactly the same scenario that I'm attempting to illustrate to you when he theorized the sudden abandonment of Mycenae around 1200 B.C had contributed to the end of the Bronze Age. Archeologists chuckled at Nur, but Nur was the seismologist. He had done his homework. If you look at history of the Mediterranean, an increased period of seismic activity started in A.D. 343 in northeastern Turkey. Others followed in 362 A.D. and 368 A.D. Then, between 394 and 412 A.D. SIX major earthquakes occurred near Constantinople (modern day Istanbul). Similar clusters of earthquakes that appear to be related have occurred in the late 4th and early 5th centuries in the southern Italian peninsula and the island of Sicily, as well as in Libya in north Africa. Clusters of quakes, Simon, NOT the single event.

I attribute that to the fact that everybody has probably already died. That's how bad this storm is, it kills before it even arrives.^Rhino! wrote:1durphul wrote:It has come to my attention that the storm coming to Northern California is going to kill everybody north of San Luis Obispo.

Excellent. When the sky clears, maybe I can find some good real estate up for grabs. Probably cheap, too. Just clear the bodies.

I'm still here dammit!!
Just a lotta rain. A whole lotta rain. Still raining in fact.
My poor lil feral cat just came to the door; finally so hungry she came out and got soaked before I got food up on the porch for her. It's a tiny porch and I'm feeding outside doggy there as well as feral kitty. Doggie will eat kitty's food if I just leave some there.
