I should mention that this project is not for BM shelter but for BM art.

A geodesic lattice can be laid onto any surface, not just a dome. The surface could even pass through itself.

I want to build something big

Thanks for the Titebond reference! I'll check it out.

Mid-50's 'Binister', meant for smaller kitchens in apartments. Picked it up at ReSource, back in the summer. Had a bunch of nuts and bolts and random shit in it, and more than a few coats of paint.

Image

Finally had to call it "good", last week. Good enough for me, doesn't need to be perfect.

Image

...and finally got around to doing the cutting and gluing of the velvet lining on the card catalog drawers, tonight. Cutting took almost no time... gluing seemed like it would never end, even though there's only 12 of them.

Why thank you!

I managed to get off my ass today and get some more done on it. Only thing left is to finish collecting the marbles I'm going to epoxy into the larger holes (that held the containment adjuster knob), and get legs on it. I'm leaning towards hairpin legs in the Eames style, but as I don't have enough 1/2" steel stock in the shop in order to make my own, I may have to have them made locally ('bout 2 miles away)...unless he's outrageous in price then I'll hafta order them from Etsy.

The biggest idea, here, is to make the damned thing actually somewhat useful. I see a lot of people putting vintage card catalogs in their home but leaving the mechanisms'n'shit in them and it seems to me you can't really do much with that. Here, you could use it as a place to keep keys, phones, smokes, change, cat treats, weed, t.v. remotes, pharm, sewing stuff, leatherworking tools, nipple clamps, blahblahblah.

Here it is in all its white, black, and pus green/yellow ("Pustard", perhaps...?) Formica glory - full of cards, too - the back of the Jeep the day I brought it home...

Fucker was heavy. All those cards....

I picked up 20 jumbo windshield sunshades for $1 each. I plan to sew them together to make a sunshade for my tent or a sunshade teepee.

Folding that up oughta be a great video.

You might want to consider cutting several small "V"-shaped slits in each one. This allows wind to pass through more easily so the shade/shades doesn't/don't become a sail, then they close up if it's still.
When we use large light modifiers on photoshoot locations, often times we have to use ones with these slits cut in them so the modifier doesn't take off like a rocket.

You also might NOT want to cut into those. Some of them have a sheet of styrofoam inside. I learned the hard way when I tried to make window covers for my van. Very moopy.

Thanks Ratty and Tin for the info. I was thinking of leaving the area for the rearview mirror open and attaching a thin silky windsock to each area. I hope that would allow airflow when its windy and block dust from entering as much.

It looks like 2014 was your first burn. The weather was pretty good and your design might hold up if conditions are the same next year, which you can never count on. Will that design hold up to 60 MPH wind gusts?

Elderberry, I so wanted to go in 2014, but wasn't able to get a ticket. I have never been to Burning Man. I hope to go in 2015. Maybe when I finish my design I can test it in a high wind situation. I have been reading info on this site for a few years, rebar, tie downs, etc. Hopefully I won't unintentionally go parasailing.

Attention torrey.smith...paging torrey.smith....

If you haven't tried it yet, some words of warning about Titebond III. Relative to other wood glues you have used in the past, it has NO working time.

I've just come back into the house from working with it for the first time, out in the garage. I'm making a cutting board out of hard maple, so I have 20 pieces of 3/4" by 7/8" by 16".
Started running glue lines, spreading it around for good coverage, did initial lining up, all that jazz. Figured I'd align everything then clamp. Y'know, like you normally do.

By the time I got to the last piece the rest of the work had already set up enough that some of it wouldn't come apart unless I dropped it flat on the garage floor a few times. A couple of glue lines refused to come apart. This was less than 10 minutes, probably more like 5 or 6. The rapid set time almost turned this project into a complete clusterfuck that would have made a very rusty Tin Halo. I managed to salvage it, although it will ultimately end up being shorter on one dimension, to account for the misalignment that I could not correct because it has no working time. You will not be able to slide any two pieces around against each other, after a few minutes.
I have enough wood to make another, and now I'm looking forward to it. I started out with a love/hate relationship but I suspect I'm gonna love this stuff because it appears to dry like no other wood glue I've ever seen, Grommit. The caveat is, you had better be damned sure the pieces you want to glue together are the pieces you need, are cut the way you want them, and have been test fitted a few times because once this shit sits for more than a few minutes you're hosed. And do not try to glue more than a few pieces together at a time; in my case, on this next cutting board I'm making, I'll be gluing only 2 pieces at a time... that's the only way I'm gonna have control over this.

So, I suspect Titebond III will do the Playa just fine.

Thanks for the warning on the quick set time... that might actually be good for me. Currently I'm experimenting with System Three 5-minute epoxy in caulking gun size with a mixing tube nozzle.

We're gonna make the poor saps who ride it haul it up and load it into position right before they go.

I am glad you will be doing it in this order. That is, they do the work first, then enjoy the ride last. That way they leave with the memory of the ride foremost in their memory.

Carry on! (Pardon the unintentional pun.)

I'm starting to characterize the dry (no adhesive) and bonded strength of the joint in tension. Dry strength is important because I need the dry dovetail joint to support one structural layer before I inject the adhesive. This 1/6 scale laser-cut model (done in 1/4" Finnish Birch plywood) failed at about 18 lbf. That scales up to about 650 lbf for a full size piece, but I'm using non-plywood Doug Fir, so it will realistically be less than half of that, and very sensitive to grain direction. We shall see what the adhesive can do for us.

ImageImage

Basic column buckling tests to confirm the stiffness of Doug Fir. I'm calculating a stiffness of about 1.25 million psi vs. 1.49-1.95 million psi from published data. This means I should get about 5,500 lbf compression out of my ~4 ft 2x4 struts when they buckle.

Image

Tensile testing of the kiln-dried wood itself yields about 10,000 psi ultimate strength. That agrees pretty well with published data. Yeah it's hard to pull a 2x4 apart with your bare hands

ImageImage

Colored sharpies and epoxy are fun to play with :D

I've officially bought the first things for BM 2015. While at a hardware store to get a new bench vise, the First Mate went to check out the Christmas clearance aisle. They had LED rope light marked 50% off! That meant $6.50 per 18-foot string! There was no white but they had blue, eight of 'em so I grabbed them all.
I measured them at 35 watts each, which is about twice what my white ones draw. That's almost 300 watts, and I've got another six 18-foot strings of white - another 100 watts - so this year's Land Yacht modifications are gonna have to be about generating more electricity.

First step: I ordered a remote for the 2000-watt Xantrex inverter, so I can put the unit under the floor right next to the batteries and eliminate the power-robbing 10-foot battery cables.

LOVE IT!! I really like the old-school cruiser fenders! The pusher setup looks awesome so far. Are the big trays on each side for batteries?

thks the trays are for the batts. , and the fenders i got off of a old pre-war girls bike. I also talked with Elliot and put a 6 speed hub on back. It does not shift but I moved the gears around so I have a 24 tooth in back instead of a 19. It pedals real easy now ")
