tatonka, bro:

for the next hour -take a trip back to the past with me. The best in the genre at Knebworth, recorded in 1976. These guys had musical talent to spare. They were just a little ol' band from Jacksonville, Florida named for their gym teacher.

I bring you: lynryd skynyrd

Lynryd Skynyrd lives on. I saw them at the Allentown fair in Allentown, PA in1995 or so. Missing some of the original members, but it was still a great show. They ended with Free Bird and when they started playing, a gentle mist started falling. Kinda eerie, almost like it was part of the show. One day during my six day weekend next week I'm gonna sit back with a can of Hamms and watch it.

One of my favorite Ted Nugent songs. Wish there was a video to this instead just an album cover.

I'm glad that you, too, enjoy them. After the deaths of Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, and Cassie Gaines in the plane crash; the death of Allen Collins and the departures of Leon Wilkeson.....not much of the original band left. The best of their work is covered in "FREEBIRD - THE MOVIE": (I got the full movie for you right here free of charge.):

[media]

After the plane crash, the first 'return to stardom' gave us the Rossington-Collins band. Two 'hits' - "Tashauna" and "Don't Misunderstand Me" gave us appreciation for a new female lead....one with the husky bluesy voice that could make anyone take notice of talent....Dale Krantz. She ended up marrying guitarist Gary Rossington.

Here she is singing 'Don't Misunderstand Me' with, of all people, Travis Tritt:

[media]

When the newest incarnation of the band came around, their album floored me, it sounded so much like the Lynyrd Skynyrd of my younger days. Not surprising, because they got Ronnie Van Zant's brother Jimmy to sing lead.

They still have the same blues feel that they had when they did real blues, such as 'Four Walls of Raiford Prison':

[media]

Yeah, I've been a fan of theirs for 38 years now.

Yes you do, considering that the lead singer doesn't even know the lyrics they do a fair job.

The song is actually in part a response to Neil Young's 'Alabama'

[media]

and NOT 'Southern Man' as many may think. Ronnie van Zant said that "people were either going to love it, or it was going to piss them off'". He didn't care. Musical responses to the song were later tendered by Molly Hatchet in their tune, "Gator Country" [line 'Well, I've been to Alabama people ain't a whole lot to see...Skynyrd says it's home sweet home but it ain't nothin' to me....."] and by Neil Young himself less than a month following the tragic plane crash. Neil was playing at a Children's Hospital benefit with his band, and at the end of the tune 'Alabama', Neil himself sang the words to 'Sweet Home Alabama' as a tribute to Ronnie Van Zant.

'Freebird' is still considered by many to be among the top ten rock and roll hits of all time, right up there with Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven". When Skynyrd played the Oakland Coliseum on July 4, 1977, it was probably the ultimate high point of the Southern Rock movement.

catman, you're on target, but you might want to add another name to that list - ZZ Top; though it's TEXAS blues. Listen to "Jesus just left Chicago" and you know it might be a good call.

And then there's "Blue Jean Blues" - this one really digs down DEEP in the blues -

Listening to a lot of Sturgill Simpson lately. Got to see him play last night at Harlows here in Sacramento, best club show I've seen in many years. Sold out crowd was way into. The dude plays legit country music with an amazingly tight band. He's gonna be a big deal. Here he is on Fallon last month:

I only have this on a warped cassette tape. The record disappeared in 1969, I think, along with my microscope and a few other choice items... So I'm glad for the online option.

Curiosity got me to wikipedia where I found;
the 2014 reissue of Wonderwall Music recognises his contributions on keyboards and guitar. The album was first remastered for CD release in 1992, for which former Apple executive Derek Taylor supplied a liner-note essay.

While viewed as something of a curiosity by rock music critics, Wonderwall Music is recognised for its inventiveness in fusing Western and Eastern sounds, and as being a precursor to the 1980s world music trend. The album's title inspired that of Oasis' 1995 hit song "Wonderwall", and its music influenced the sound of Oasis' fellow Britpop band Kula Shaker. Harrison's full soundtrack for the film was made available on DVD in early 2014, as part of the two-disc Wonderwall Collector's Edition. In September that year, the album was reissued in remastered form as part of the Apple Years 1968–75 Harrison box set, with the addition of three bonus tracks.

They held it in Sedalia, Missouri at the State Fairgrounds, right?

Sedalia, and for that matter, most of the towns on US 50 in Missouri (Kansas City and St. Louis are the exceptions) have no clue when it comes to real rock and roll. Hence, Interstate 70 was built originally well north of US 50 to get away from the country music corridor.

You went to basic at Fort Lost in the Woods, Misery (Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri). US Army Engineers, MPs, and NBC training is held there now. 10 miles down the road in Lacquey, Missouri is where the Midwest Burners' regional, Interfuse, is held. One of these days, we're going to use bigger and better flame and fireworks effects, and THEN, we'll have the Army's helicopters flying over to check us out. I think that would be great, ESPECIALLY when we invite them down for beer and the famous potluck dinner.
