international freight

Hi.
i am looking for advice from fellow burners regarding freight/ transport of sculpture
I am building a sculpture for the playa for 2015 and its quite big
not too big that it wont fit in a sea container in parts
im planning on final assembly in nimby before transport to the playa
i actually have not ever freighted internationally before and im looking for some tips and general advice please
as much info as possible thanks
I live in Australia , so any country specific advice would be cool too

A company I work for sent a 20ft container from Sydney to New York and brought it back last year for AUD$19,000. Would you be bringing it back or leaving it in the US or burning it? One way wouldn't be half the cost and you'd need to consider import duties which are avoided when you take something back with you.

Belvoir, it's a theatre company in Sydney. If you have any specific questions about how to go about this I can ask the Tour Production Manager. Personally I would investigate the price difference between putting it on a boat in Perth and having it driven on the back of a truck across to the east coast and shipping it from there. That could make a big difference I'd imagine. I do know that the way to avoid paying import duties and taxes because you'll be re-exporting is by having documentation called a carnet (pronounced kar-nay). It seems like there are companies specifically to help with that.
