Tornados in southern California! And I thought all we had to worry about was earth quakes.

(has there ever been a tornado in SoCal before?)

I'm not looking forward to the upcoming freezing weather. I get to spend a day getting a lemon tree secured in its own mini green house (repurposed monkey hut PVC, duct tape and 4 mil plastic sheeting, cover Lumux's olive tree and get all the potted plants into a greenhouse. Good thing I have three days off coming up. Plus my toes have been giving me trouble. Be very afraid of frostbite kids. It's reoccurring nerve damage pain brought on by cold. I need to buy wool socks and real dead sheep boots. Synthetic sucks.

the tornado, IMHO, JK, is just the same as the swirl of a toilet bowl or bathtub drain. of course it'd be over southern CA..................

Except that they can cause tremendous damage. We had the first one that I have ever heard of yesterday in South Los Angeles. It tore off a roof and sent a lot of other debris airborne. In the Midwest, they have wiped out neighborhoods.

Wiped out neighborhoods, indeed. Glad you used the plural. I've had the distinct displeasure of actually seeing two. It can scare many people very seriously here. There's a reason, especially where a larger storm on the Fujita scale is involved.

In the movie "Twister", Bill Pullman's soon to be ex-fiancé asks a group of tornado chasers, "Is there an F5? What's an F5?"

The room goes silent.

Bill Pullman mutters, "the wrath of God."

He's not far off. The effects of an F5 go WAY beyond just the physical damage to the area at the time. There's emotional damage to the residents, to the community as well. "Something that big, that powerful, took OUR town and turned it into a parking lot" becomes the mode of thinking. Shattered dreams and hopes demoralize the community. The tough Midwesterners who stay build again, though nearly everything is lost. We saw this in Joplin just a couple of years ago. It hit St. John's Mercy Hospital - West square on. Amazingly, there were no deaths. They built that building strong.

Here's footage from a waiting room security camera at the hospital:

[media]

The emergency services dispatch for the first 36 minutes is here:

[media]

Storm chasers were only 30 to 45 seconds in front of the storm:

I could go on and on, but I won't. Needless to say, these things are sobering and deadly.

Shit, Simon, do you know how much the California landscape has changed since 1862?

The FIRST thing I'd worry about would be the dams below Richmond Mine at Iron Mountain, near Redding. Four words for you. Disaster waiting to happen. When Spring Creek Reservoir reaches capacity, there are unplanned releases of toxic levels of copper and cadmium into the Sacramento River.

pH coming out of that mine has been measured as -3.6. Bad news.

a friend of mine worked on/in that mine or the same complex.
he said if they left a wrench or some such in the water, it'd be total rust by the next day.

Though, seems if the flooding is that bad, it'd super dilute ...not that it's ok, but it would not turn the Sac. river into an acid bath.

From the acid side of things, it might dilute it enough. From the metal side of things, not good.....did you know cadmium's effects are cumulative? The stuff tends to accumuilate in the liver and kidneys.

Expect fish kills at the least.

I swear to God some people are so stupid that they shouldn't be allowed to invest their money. I just had a lady call me up in a panic because her Huntington Hospital Bonds were in default and that she lost all of her money. I would have thought I would have known that, but I needed to take a closer look. After checking, she didn't get a default notice but a defeasance notice. Don't you people know plain English? So I told her (and keep in mind, I sell municipal bonds for a living) that not only did she not lose any money, but just locked in a capital gain of $18,000. And what thanks did I get? "Well, default and defeasance look almost the same to me." I swear, some people.

Dr. Pyro, sounds like you gave her good advice, to lock in an $18K capital gain.

She should have called you for a definition, or looked it up herself.

Unfortunately, the 'some stupid people' goes all around everywhere, but especially so in regulatory affairs. I can name one instance where OSHA tried to fine a Maryland trucking firm carrying a load of washed stream gravel because they 'didn't have a 'free silica' regulatory placard (intended for fine-grained respirable silica, like dust particles). The order and fine were later rescinded, but OSHA held to the letter of the law for over a month.

Once, an OSHA inspector showed up at a VERY safety sensitive site, one of Red Adair's petroleum firefighting locations. Red himself was there. Everything was hunky-dory until the inspector noticed that Red was wearing a leather strap -supported STEEL hardhat, instead of the required plastic MSHA-approved model. Red took the inspector close-up, where the men were spraying copious amounts of water on the fire from behind galvanized corrugated metal shields. They only stayed long enough for the plastic hard hat on the inspector's head to begin to soften and melt. They left the area, and a variance was written on the spot.

Stupid people can be from all walks of life.

Sorry, Doc, but "defeasance" is some sort of professional argot, not "plain English". I'm not sure that I've ever seen it before, and--not to brag*--I am singularly well-endowed in terms of vocabulary. And I bet if we could figure out how to do an experiment, we could show that people are primed to see scary financial words when they open financial documents. However, I'm sure that that sort of thing is an annoyance at your job. I know I have a certain amount of eye-rolling when I'm talking to someone who is that off=base.
And not only is "defeasance" unfamiliar to me, but my spellcheck doesn't like it either. It does offer up "misfeasance" a word that I would consider English, but not part of the Anglo-Saxon rooted words that are the core of the language, and I consider to be over-represented in "plain English".

*And I lied. I'm bragging, bragging, bragging. Then bragging some more.

Crypto, had it occurred to you that the source of the fear might have been the word, 'malfeasance'? That one is legitimate, and using the prefix of 'mal', which I consider as negative also. Misfeasance would be similar. Malfeasant behavior might land one in jail, while a defeasant instrument Dr, Pyro assures us is positive. I despise the use of professional jargon when communication of important information from an expert to someone who is not so expert is required.

However, I WILL use big words to mess with fellow professionals in a playful manner. I used the word 'quaquaversal' in my last published paper, and the chief editor of the publication hadn't seen it used before. He looked it up, decided that my use was justified, and it got published as written. When we met at a later national convention, hetold me that 'that's one I don't see every day; thanks for teaching me a new term'. We're now friends.

Patsch, you're closest.

"Quaquaversal" means dipping away from, or dipping in towards a central point, and is used to describe the rock strata dipping away from the crest of a domal uplift , or towards the center of a basin or sunken area. I used the term to describe the beds dipping in towards the central depression of a paleokarst deposit.
