That's because things like this are pretty rare here. We had a terrible massacre in the mid-ninties, said "Fuck this" and enacted sweeping nation wide gun control. We've gone nearly 20 years without a similar incident as a result.

Re: Fuck!
That's really easy to say for Australia. It's not the same in the U.S. Our need for personal armament goes back to the early days of colonial North Carolina, Massachusetts, and other states. It became reinforced by our need for self-protection in the French and Indian War, the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, and many other conflicts.Jovankat wrote:That's because things like this are pretty rare here. Today, partially it's the need for the common citizen to be able to protect him/herself from criminals. In my area of the country, we have many recreational hunters during deer, turkey, quail, dove, pheasant, and other seasons. Go further west or south and we can hunt alligator, buffalo, elk, and even rattlesnake. The hunting populace pays for all of this through sales taxes on ammunition and firearms, and supports a strong game management program. There are even a few very proficient target shooters. I don't think you'll ever have the kinds of laws in the US that you will in Australia.

Rhino you're right, Australia's gun culture was no where near what America's is which is why the Fox News commentators comments along the lines of "if only Australians still had guns this would never have happened" were so off the mark. Even if we hadn't dramatically changed our gun legislation in the nineties the idea that a banker or lawyer in central Sydney would just casually be carrying a gun to work in Martin Place is just ludicrous. Even before gun control that would have been weird to Australians. We also have the benefit of being an island with very strict and effective customs procedures. I imagine that would be a huge practical issue for any gun control measures in the US.
But Lucky is also right, as much as owning a gun to protect yourself is a big part of American culture so is gun violence. America leads the world in gun violence per capita. There's also the kind of guns that are on your street. The siege yesterday happened with a shot gun. I think that's probably why it was a siege not a massacre. Something else that's sadly a very American phenomenon.
And for what it's worth I grew up in a regional part of Australia and my family had guns my whole life, we didn't give them up in the buy back. My mother and my step dad both have gun licences and we all enjoy target practice, I would go out to the range more often if it weren't in bumfuck nowhere. If I ever move to the US I will probably take up the sport regularly. I wouldn't ever keep a gun in my house or carry one in public though.
So you guys can be as patriotically pro gun as you like, it's part of your culture just as it is now a very big part of Australian culture to be be genuinely confused and saddened by your refusal to reevaluate that stance even in the face of overwhelming evidence against it.
I look forward to your angry responses. Just please try to keep it civil

Re: Fuck!
Pro-gun for me has nothing to do with patriotism. If I thought I needed one, I could buy one. I don't hunt, find furniture refinishing more satisfying than target practice, and live in a very safe part of town. It has to do with freedom to do what I feel is necessary for my life, home, family, happiness and longevity.

Re: Fuck!
The thing is though if you thought you needed a gun to protect yourself, your home or your family, you'd be wrong. The actual statistics on gun ownership plainly show that the only real benefit of owning a gun is the feeling of safety. And in fact that feeling often makes gun owners act more aggressively and take more risks.
That a benefit that is literally all in your head is more important than innocent children not being gunned down in their schools boggles my mind. The idea that respecting someone's feelings, whether they be about owning a gun or about religious beliefs, is more important than the actual practical and tangible impacts that respecting those feelings will have on the lives of other people seems to me to be a very American thing. Thecatman is right, Australia is different to the US in many ways and our gun legislation is one of the ways I'm pretty happy about. There are some differences I'm less happy about. I wish we had freedom of speech laws for instance. Although even with freedom of speech there should be limits. Like for instance you haven't said fuck in your last two posts Rhino. That is not ok

not to be a wet blanket, but a fucking gun control, debate, in this thread is goofy!
you Jovankat as a person, and maybe even as an Aussie, don't understand or agree with our laws/feelings/demands.
we can fucking discuss this, and have, ad infinitum......how about elsewhere, though? Just sayin, for folks who have real "fucks" to share................

Re: Fuck!
I didn't come here to start a fucking debate. Thecatman made a comment about an armed siege not seeming like a particularly Australian occurrence and I explained why it really isn't, that wasn't a comment on US gun laws, it was a titbit of historical context. Where's Rhino's fucking admonishment for bringing the US into what was a discussion about a fucking horrible thing that happened in Australia? Why did you need to make a comment that as far as I can tell was pretty massively fucking insulting to my entire nation? I don't fucking think for a second that I'm going to convince any of you to change your minds but if you're going to reply to me and make comments about my country I'm going to engage you in a fucking conversation.

Hold on there, it wasn't meant to bring the US into the discussion, I was just supplying a little bit of the
historical context. I fully agree that it was a tragedy in Australia. I also was about to agree with you about the Fox 'newsies' and their motto, "We distort, you decide." No one is insulting Australia. I happen to appreciate them a lot. One thing that most folks don't know is that the Australians invented atomic absorption spectrophotometry.
I also am totally absorbed by the competence and observations of the Aussie geological community. Out in Western Australia, there's a place called Shark Bay where Hamelin Pool occurs. It's absolutely an awesome analog to ancient reef systems (and modern ones as well and in other contexts).
The one thing I will criticize Australians for is changing the apparel of their football referees. I used to think the white-suited refs in Australian football were cool. Our zebra-striped ninnies on the football field look like convicts turned 90 degrees. Then they changed the uniforms.

Re: Fuck!
I wasn't suggesting you were being insulting Rhino but, as best I could glean, ygmir's comment about us being less evolved was meant as an insult.
And as I've said before I find it pretty goofy that people around here will get involved in a conversation and then try to stop it once someone is disagreeing with them, therefore eliciting further response. It seems like just stopping their involvement in the conversation and letting it die a natural death would make more sense.
But for fucksake Rhino you have to fucking say fuck a bit fucking more.

I agree. You said nothing that I inferred in my post. Since Jovankat is an Aussie, I thought I'd stir the pot there a bit with 'convicts and rabbits'. And then I mistakenly drug you into it. For that, I apologize. I will also cease any extrapolations and/or inferences on my part concerning you.
Massive apology meant from the heart.
And I'll take your "fuck you" in the BRC context, where 'fuck you and fuck your day' means "I love you too." (all the more so if you're a member of DPW)

I felt just a little pinprick every once in a blue moon, the less so as I got older. I finally SAW the sliver when I cut my pinkie doing some woodwork (not seriously, though), so I got the tweezers out of the toolbox and the sliver came out.

I felt just a little pinprick every once in a blue moon, the less so as I got older. I finally SAW the sliver when I cut my pinkie doing some woodwork (not seriously, though), so I got the tweezers out of the toolbox and the sliver came out.
Things tend to work out in the long run.
