Valley Fever is alive and well and a real on-going problem in the San Joaquin valley. It's something that we note about projects in those areas, where there's going to be a lot of ground disturbance during construction.

Which is why I brought it up in the first place, my friend. There was a good article on it in a recent book published by the Geologic Society of America, Vol. XII in their Engineering Geology series. The article was entitled "An outbreak of coccidiodmycosis (valley fever) caused by landslides triggered by the 1994 Northridge, California earthquake". Landslides in canyon areas upwind of Simi Valley, Chivo, and Las Llajas Canyons aligned with the wind direction and then the elongation direction of the coccidiomycosis distribution in Simi Valley proper.

The point of the article was if you learn about the hazard, then you can anticipate the possibilities, perform even more rapid screening, and that leads to more rapid medical treatment that may reduce the number of serious or fatal cases.

Dust control measures are a must in the Simi Valley area, and BRC has its own dust control in the form of the water wagons. The other effective means of control is a dust mask that can handle 5 micron size particles, similar to what OSHA and MSHA recommend.

In all my years attending, last year was the worst for my lungs. I suspect it was irritation from the smoke of theYosemite fire.

I've lost my voice every year since 2011, but for some reason this year I didn't lose it completely. Maybe having a megaphone helped (even used it during camp meetings).

The burner friend I camped with my first year no longer attends; last I heard from her she was having lung problems, and thought it was from 20 years working gate.

Valley fever would be pretty far down my list of possible culprits for the elusive 'playa lung'. Coccidiomycosis is more in the SW and not so much in northern Nevada.
a map if you're nerdly or nervous enough to care...

Also Valley fever typically takes 1-3 weeks for incubation/initial symptoms after exposure. From what I've noticed there seems to be a fairly immediate upper airway irritation right after leaving the playa. I haven't heard of anyone posting on here saying they had been diagnosed with VF (although it probably gets missed a lot unless someone is getting really sick and the doc has to keep doing a work up for a worsening patient.)

If nothing else, I'd agree with you simply because there is not a lot of fungal growth on the playa, with the exception of sparkle ponies and hippies.

Wait a minute. Where are you getting this information?

I thought they rounded up the last herd of wild sparkle ponies a long time ago???
And hippies! There are no real hippies any more. This new crop is just a bunch of stinky, scruffy dirtbags from what I've seen. Hippies actually understood bathing, clothes washing and hygiene if my drug addled memory serves me of that time period.

Dana, If you remember it then you weren't there. My playa lung is always gone by xmas. Now I'm just dying at the usual rate.

You haven't attended a Rainbow gathering in New Mexico, have you? That one was later billed as "1000 Easy Ways to Trash a National Forest"

Midwest Burners have a few wild sparkle ponies left, but they are an endangered breed.
