A buddy of mine flies rockets on Playa too. It's sometime in October, isn't it?

I've always wanted to go, but it's too much for me to drive home after the event, then turn around and drive back a few weeks later.

I didn't realize they are cutting vehicle passes fairly dramatically this year. For general sale there is only about one vehicle pass available for every four tickets being sold. That seems to make it pretty hard to get a vehicle pass.

While I would like to go to Burning Man at least once, I might just forget about the whole thing after seeing how hard it could be to get a vehicle pass. That would leave more tickets for everyone else.

God damn... there are enough vehicle passes... it sounds like you're just talking yourself out of it. Just don't go if you don't want to. If you do wanna go, then go for it!

So, is the rocket launching stuff your other playa thing?! You can talk rockets here... we talk cars, animals, crafts, electronics, whatever!
I'm just guessing rockets because that's the main other thing that goes on out there.

But he said his thing was a few weeks after Burning Man.
I'd like to go to that July thing sometime, but it's pretty far to go for a weekend.

Well, ya know.... The first rule of Satanic goat-humping rituals is to never talk about Satanic goat-humping rituals.

I'm switching my answer to "Don't go, you'll have a terrible time."

Don't go, you'll have a terrible time getting a vehicle pass.

Ya I gotta say man, stop agonizing about it - you've already admitted that you're interested/curious so why not try it out?
If we talked ourselves out of every new thing we might try just because we 'might not like it' we'd live the boring-est lives ever.. Just look at Bilbo, imagine if he'd just talked himself out of leaving the shire..

But in all seriousness, you sound like you are WAY more prepared for the playa than most people I have known that have gone. If you're biggest fear is that you won't fit in, then you WILL fit in! Burning Man is not your usual social scene or even like any other festival out there - people are approachable (and will approach you), there is so much amazing art/activities going on that it's near impossible to not get distracted or check out/play with everything you can - and just wait until the sun goes down! I know you say you go to bed early but the lights/lasers/spotlights/fire it's all just so incredible and it's an ENTIRE CITIES' WORTH!
Seriously, stop fretting and just focus on getting a ticket, it's the toughest part. Once you've got that sorted just mentally commit yourself, go alone if you have to!
Even if you don't completely enjoy it, it will still be something incredible you did that most folks only talk about.

Remember, most people will never know what is beyond their own doorstep.

PS - parking passes will be easy to get, there were piles of them last year, just grab one when you get your ticket and you'll be fine.
