I've had a copy of the operators manual since last year. Another thing I've poured over on my time, primarily because it's something that I'm interested in
Pennsylvania uses beet juice as well.
We use a 1 to 1 mix of salt/sand, for pretreatment it's still brine

aserendipity, Sorry I didn't make it on NYE. The girls at work forbade me to go.
1. I don't know what you look like
2. I don't have an entry ticket
3. You don't have a ride home and the guilt of me leaving you standing on the curb is going to be 'crushing'.
4. If I get in you may be in an inaccessible area due to your connections.
5. It's cold!
6. They want me to stay and play with them.
Did you go? Did you get in? What did I miss? Don't get me wrong, I had a fine time at work with my extended family. I really like to go to the City with no plan. I hop buses, take cabs, pop in for drinks etc...

Beet juice is one of the most 'environmentally friendly' tools we have for pretreatment down to about 28 degrees F. Below that, we use salt brine, mixed with calcium chloride below 10 degrees F. Sand is used where abrasive qualities are needed.aserendipity wrote:Thanks Rhino,

Re: The Bar 2015 Edition
In southern Missouri, especially deep southern Missouri, it's a little warmer and we mix 3:1:1:1 salt, calcium chloride, sand, and sawdust. They sweep up the sawdust after the snow and dispose of it because it soaks up the salt brine a little bit. The sand keeps abrading and normally washes off Normally, we don't use sand on asphalt because the sun will hit the asphalt and warm it to where no abrasive is needed.Thecatman wrote:I've had a copy of the operators manual since last year. Rhino, Dear , when a Sparklepony asks a question ..ie: "is it easier on the chassis ?"
yes or no usually suffice.
Now I shall have to consider the mixtures you describe.
Ratty, oh ye of little faith, except it sounds as if your buds at work are who you really were supposed to be with anyway.
Yes, I was invited in and went vip black wristband.

Are you talking air or road temp? One morning this past week it was 10 above in Reno, my road temp gauge in the work truck read -13. But every air/road temp gauge we have will read different within a few degrees.^Rhino! wrote:Beet juice is one of the most 'environmentally friendly' tools we have for pretreatment down to about 28 degrees F.
We're supposed to sweep our shoulders within 72 hours after a storm. EPA regulations. They're on our backs something fierce out here.
I've heard Caltrans uses ground walnut shells for an abrasive mixed with sand and possibly salt

Re: The Bar 2015 Edition
I'm talking road temp. Epa is putting the screws to you all due to your lesser chance of runoff and hence higher likelihood of concentrating the road salt. We've also been using uncoated roofing granules (made of recrystallized rhyolite) for abrasion. The stuff is essentially a fine sand, and is much sharper, tearing the hell out of ice. The reason we don't sweep shoulders is because we average more than 50" of rain a year.Thecatman wrote:Are you talking air or road temp? Never tried it in a bar.goathead wrote:beet juice in a bar?
Especially not of the 'spent' variety. That stuff really stinks.
Our department came out with stats for last year's snow fight, and while we spread over 1.5 million pounds of salt (used directly and in salt brine) we ended up using only 350,000 gallons of beet juice.

A little snow, Gerlach looks ready for a group photo in the near future, I hope. Reno is looking nice also. I've got my desk set up, and am ready to become my newest incarnation of a wage earner. The open road gave me back a sense of who I think I am versus who I was convinced I was. Having wonderful friends along the way to share hopes with and see hopes mirrored back was great therapy. Just having a holiday from daily pressures was time for my perspective to shift back to good chance of survival. The burner archipelago is a real thing. Thank you to all.
