You were also enjoying the calm before the storm. Hey, I left you a magnetic nut bowl to 'Put your nuts here'. If you would like some more of them just say the word. I know you worked on my bike this year but I can't remember why. You had tubes left over? Should we bring you more if we have new ones to donate?
Yeah, that was probably the still before the storm. Although, I don't think we were as busy as the previous year, on the eight-day average. Of course, we had more mechanics than before. But we had a rash of ruined wheels early in the week -- on bikes that had dragged on the ground behind cars! So... hey, everybody, be sure you secure those bikes well, and with lots of ground clearance.

I brought so many tubes that we did indeed have quite a few left over. Having brought "enough" was a good feeling. The rest will of course be used this year. I am buying only "Thorn Resistant" tubes now. They are so very much worth the extra silver. Donations are most definitely welcome! We can use practically any new tubes, but I recommend the Thorn Resistant ones for any and all purposes. They hold air longer and resist puncture better.

I will bring a few more of the odd sizes, and with Presta valve, than in the past, since we seem to always need some of those also.

Yes, the nut-tray is handy, so one or two more would be welcome. Thank you!

No magnets around bike parts.. They attract little bits on metal that can get into the bearings.. The dish went home with me.. I'll return it.. The dishes work great on car parts..

Unjohn, Please keep it. It'll keep your nuts cool in the summer heat. I'll bring some more for the do it yourself table. I love all the free stuff I get from Harbor Freight. Flashlights, headlights, tarps, cheap tools, cheap scissors, cheap shit.

Hi Elliot.

If the offer is still there, my wife Carla and I would love to be a part of your camp this year. I'd be happy to do bike repairs, but I think Carla would be more into serving wine. :)

This will be my 7th burn, and I think it will be Carla's 10th.

I was wondering if you would have room for Carla's son, Eddy too? He is a great mechanic. He made us a Burning Man art piece. It's The Man sitting on a swing. Made of metal and has included some old bike parts. (See pictures)

Working on an art car for this years Burning Man. Base is a 35+ years old golf cart. Refurbished the motor and replacing all electrical pieces and parts. A fun project! :)

WOO-HOO!! Three more wondermuss campers!

We will make room, if necessary. But I am quite sure the Placement Team will give us enough space for our need.
This is mahvellous!

Yeah, this could get out of hand.
I'm counting 19 people already, with 7 of them mechanics, and one coaching do-it-yourself repair, and it is only January. Maybe I ought to take down the recruiting banner in my sig-line? Nahhh.

I do plan on using this method as I work on other people's bikes as well, i feel that it is a great way to teach people what is wrong with the bike, how it works, how to fix it etc.

Navi, you are learning faster than I can teach you! I do this whenever possible. It is part of our basic camp concept. By "possible", I mean that the customer is interested in learning, and that we are not too horribly busy.
With more mechanics this year, we may be able to take the time to teach every customer who is open to it.

haha, I dont care if the customer is interested or not, if they want their bike fixed they are going to have the tools in their hands and me over their shoulder. telling them how to do it. even if we are busy, you are on the playa. you got nothin but time out there right?!

I'm ordering a bike stand.. I don't have to bend over or get on the ground..

There is a limit of space to the bike repair shelter

Some times it's good to have the customer sit down with a cold one..

It could get hard to work with to many milling around.. I found this out when to many tried to repair there own.. Using one set of tool off one table..

I am expanding the shade in front of the bus. And I may set up the Do-It-Yourself Area on the other side of the bus, where I can easily run the shade 12 or even 20 feet out. So we are not going to be cramped.

As for tools, I am assembling a couple new kits, but it would be best if the mechanics can bring their own. I will eventually get around to writing a list of the commonly needed tools.

I think separating the do-it-yourself area from the full service area is a good idea.

I will be bringing my tool box and be keeping it locked when not in use. if you are working on bikes you probably already have your own tools. and i will also only be handling 1 person at a time.

is it unethical for me to bring my bolt cutters an play yellow bike lock patrol

I don't know. My thinking is that one should definitely not go into anybody's camp and do this. But for a bike that is locked right out at the edge of the street, or in another very public place, it might not be a horrible crime. But that's just my own thinking. It would constitute destruction of private property -- the lock -- which is a crime. (Not that I would "notice" if anyone did that. And I can add that every year I have to fix at least one YB that somebody has stolen parts off -- usually saddle or handlebar.)

What you might want to do, is ask the Yellow Bike people. I don't see an e-mail address right away, but I do see a Facebook page, so try that:

:D
All-righty-then. This is the version that will be official: "Elliot's Bicycle Service & Beverage Station".

It is fun to change it around once in a while -- "Elliot's beer belching & bicycle bashing emporium" -- but all correspondence with BRC offishuls need to carry the same identifying camp name, and "Bicycle Service & Beverage Station" just happened to be in the hopper when I froze the design (as mechanical engineers call it).

In other news... A cheerful chap named Ian Stone has contributed several photos from his visit to our Do-It-Yourself table last year. One of the shots show how NOT to turn an axle-nut. I have cropped the picture quite hard to protect the... guilty.

:?:
Technical question:

On bicycles with 1-piece cranks, there are two types of caged bearings -- 9-ball or 10-ball, depending on the threads (28 tpi / 24 tpi). According to Sheldon Brown (All hail his memory!), they are not interchangeable. But the balls are the same size -- 5/16 -- and I'm pretty sure I have never paid attention to 9 or 10.

Anybody?

Ah, I see you are familiar with Harris Cyclery, home of The Late Great Sheldon Brown, since this photo came from them. Good.

I have used such conversions. But I have never seen the advantage of 3-piece cranks. On Playa, we get many bikes where a crank-arm has fallen off a 3-piece unit (usually the left arm). Also, when we need to replace a chain-ring, we often do not have the part, whereas we have plenty of chain-rings for 1-piece. (I'm talking about second-hand parts.)
We also see more stripped pedal-threads in aluminum arms.

(Now... the old "cottered" 3-piece cranks are not much good. I have twisted those.)

I would love to learn why 3-piece cranks are superior. I grant that we see less trouble with the bearings on those.
And anything else I can learn!

They talk about jumping thru the air and landing hard while standing on the pedals. That's seems irrelevant for our purposes.

Now...
I have found that a one piece has a tendency to spin on you while doing tricks.
What do they mean by this? What does "spin" mean in this context?

WalMar Mongoose left crank arms must be tighten to spec torque.. Saw a few that fell off on the playa.. The assemblers must not use a a torque wrench..

I once looked up those specs. Don't remember the numbers, but it is monstrously tight. Essentially all the force I can muster on a 6" wrench (my Park Tool crank-arm puller/tightener).

Elliot has torque wrench built into his arm.. My hands and arms are hot strong enough anymore.. In my case I would take the bike to a shop..

All right, I looked it up again.
Manufacturers vary, but 310 to 390 inch-pounds is ballpark, with one brand going as high as up to 520 inch-pounds(!).
So let's call it 350 to 400 inch-pounds, which converts into 30 to 35 foot-pounds.

I "pretzeled" a Wal-Mart Huffy cruiser chain ring from just riding it up a steep hill on a hard packed dirt trail. It made for a long push back to the truck. Guess I didn't know my own leg strength.
