Why would it be unethical? Unless you believe that it will lead to cutting off locks of non-community bikes...

How about enjoying your burn.. Less about others ethics.. More fun time..

If some one is asshat enough to lock a yellow bike.. They would most likely be asshat enough to punch you in the nose..

Not locking a yellow bike is not a rule/law.. It is more like, please don't do this.

A lot of people SAY that they cut the locks off Yellow Bikes. I don't know how much it actually happens.

I've seen one or two Yellow Bikes per year. At that rate, maybe in 5 years I'll see one locked up. There's only a few hundred in a big city, I think they get talked about WAY out of proportion to the actual impact they have on anyone's burn. Just ignore them, bring your own bike if you need it, and perhaps through serendipity one will play a role in your burn somehow.

I followed the 'bike picker truck' this year and watched them gather bikes in the morning. They stood on a flatbed, (with really great music), and spotted bikes tucked away in camps as well as on the roadside. They could sure pick those needles out of those haystacks. I don't know where they took them.

i was under the impression that locking it claims it is yours and constitutes stealing. sad thing is, i would probably have fun doing this XD..i doubt someone is going to facepunch me when i have chain cutters in my hand...

A yellow bike hoarder is more app to remove the seat or handlebars..

Yellow bikes with flat tires, missing seats or handlebars should be returned to the yellow bike repair camp.. A good burner will walk a downed yellow bike home.. The camp can repair them for someone else to enjoy

I think their initial grant/gift gave them 1,000 bikes and they are now down to about 750.

I have seen some pretty busted up at the repair camp..

Yellow bikes break the same as any other bike..

A good burner that a yellow bike breaks while they ride it.. Would walk it home to the yellow bike repair camp....

Coupla years ago I witnessed a Yellow Bike posse of volunteers actively on the search for locked Yellow Bikes. When they found one, the lock was cut and the bike was inspected and put back into circulation.

Suggest no one cut locks if you are alone.. You might find a BRC ranger to help free a yellow bike.. It would be more reasonable than getting beat up over something that silly..

Hmmmmmmmm....... By sheer fluke... I was reading, only a few days ago, the BRC Rangers training manual, thinking I might join -- so in case patrolling the enclosure becomes old-hat, I might perchance prefer patrolling the inmates.

Old story, still true. While waiting in line for pancakes I over hear the guy in back of me offer a bike to another stranger in line, not a yellow bike. The generous guy says that he was out in deep playa, saw a yellow bike and a civilian bike locked together. It outraged him so he went back to camp, got bolt cutters and went to liberate the bike. I said, wow, that sure is ballsy, but the bike you just gave away isn’t a yellow bike. He said, yeah, that was the other bike the yellow one was locked to, fuck them. I in no way approved of this act or supported it in anyway, but once I got my pancakes I did give the dude my bottle of real maple syrup. Do not do repeat this guys actions, story is for informational purposes only.

I'm starting to think the yellow bikes cause more problems and antagonistic behavior than they solve. Of course, that is seen through the poop-tinted lens of ePlaya.

I have always thought of the Yellow Bikes as somebody's art project, rather than a public utility.

Yeah, I know, right? It's really brought me around to appreciating the program even more.

it isnt yellow bikes that cause problems, obviously it is the mentality of the ones stealing them causing problems. What would you do if someone stole your tent and then you found it at someone else's camp? Wouldnt you take it back by any means necessary?

Like Elliot said, it IS someone elses art project. Those bikes are meant for EVERYONE to use. I actually run a bike share theme camp that I'm starting to take around the burns in the southeast U.S.. If I see one of MY bikes that I gifted to the COMMUNITY, you bet your ass that I'm going to do everything I can to give it back to the community. Actually been trying to think of a way to hide some bolt cutters on my burn bike.

I bring around 30 or so bike locks every year. I sometimes find people on yellow bikes wanting one. I give them my lecture on locking community bikes.
The idea of borrowed bikes is great---as long as everyone understands the concept of them.

No sympathy for the lockers. By using the bike they are admitting to one of two things. Either they are aware of the program and can recognize the bikes (admitting they know about the ban on locking) or they are unaware of the program and are (as far as they know) simply stealing a bike.

Navi_Keef, About those bolt cutters. You can slip them into a fur bag and attach it to the spot where you would find a water bottle. (You know, between your knees). You won't need the 3 foot ones. Burners usually have cheap locks.
