Re: Bike Builders Unite
I'm installing taller bars as I write... I'm also thinking I want lower gears. I have a triple front sprocket and derailleur from a mountain bike that someone left on the playa a few years ago... it might take a little custom adapting, but I have the whole setup shifter and all... and the seat, after test ride number one, the stock seat is off the bike for good.

My shop is full of goodies waiting to be installed on my Schwinn trike. Front delivery basket, tall handlebars, and a backrest seat. Next thing to order: electric motor for front wheel.

Hey CaptGD nice lookin goose! Those bars and seat are cool. I put bar ends on mine for better stand-up riding on trails. And hey Elliot I didn't know (or forgot) you had a beast too, awesome. And I love that little flame thrower car Keef lol. ideas...
So this was my dolo bike ride today in red on this nifty map...the green part was last weeks low-tide-on-the-sand route:

"The riders look like a monkey humping a foot ball" hahahaha!

I was hoping for something bigger that supplies off of a 5lb gas grill tank with a little more Poof...Navi_Keef wrote:probably something along the lines of thisNavi_Keef wrote:haha i plan on doing the same thing! plan on using one of those camping 3lb green tanks and a tiki torch to use as the idle flame!captain voltaveus wrote:

I just built a rubens tube for my 8th grader's science project and figure that's the gateway drug of propane poofer projects - but that's a different thread!

Re: Bike Builders Unite
yeah this will be my first poofer project so i figure something on this level will be a little bit easier, especially since i plan on using a tiki torch as a pilot so i can really just use the tank some hosing and a solenoid and have the switch on the handlebars. i rather not have a big tank like that to add extra weight to the back. im thinking each tank should last me 2-3 nights of riding around poofing but we shall see!captain voltaveus wrote: I was hoping for something bigger that supplies off of a 5lb gas grill tank with a little more Poof...

Re: Bike Builders Unite
Quick and dangerous (woohoo) poofer trick, if you're using a gas grill style bottle... if you have it so you can flip the bottle upside down when you want to, it'll make way bigger fire.

I thought you meant you were going to fashion something that looked like a tiki torch. Those things used to be on 'the list' along with loose feather boas and confetti.

Re: Bike Builders Unite
A tiki torch flame will reach 3 plus feet in the wind.. That is why you rarely see them on playa.. Looks like your set up would blow the torch out when you fire the gas.. If you lower the tiki flame enough to stop blow out the playa wind will..
I have a metal heater that has striker in it.. HF has weed burners with strikers i them.. They shoot a hell-of-a-flame..

Then there were those two boys with cases of aerosol cans and bic lighters. It was spectacular. Fox fur said they were going to blow themselves up.
Now I remember. It wasn't bic lighters. They would point their spray at a BBQ to light it, then aim at the sky to have dueling fire swords.

are tiki torches moopy?Ratty wrote: Those things used to be on 'the list' along with loose feather boas and confetti.
yeah i was going to integrate some sort of wind shield on the front of it.unjonharley wrote:A tiki torch flame will reach 3 plus feet in the wind.. That is why you rarely see them on playa.. I am also considering on using a propane fueled tiki torch

Re: Bike Builders Unite
No. Not moopy. They were in the safety section along with campfires. Tiki torches blow over in the wind. Especially in this loose playa. I know that won't be your problem. I would hate to get stopped and questioned about it at the gate.

Re: Bike Builders Unite
Would a small coleman camping bottle really generate enough pressure to blast any real poof? I tried using one of those for my Ruben's tube and it didn't generate enough pressure to fully prime the system.
Could one easily modify the weed burners that are commercially available at HD for trike mounted fire effects?

Re: Bike Builders Unite
if you watch the first video i posted and look at the tutorial he is using one of the 4-5oz propane bottle. honestly i would be completely content with a poof that size. keep in mind that your rubens tube also has multiple ports of exit and is constantly flowing. this fire effect would only be delivering short burstcaptain voltaveus wrote:Would a small coleman camping bottle really generate enough pressure to blast any real poof? For a trike mounted poofer, I would say yes.. There are limits to the size fire close to surrounding areascaptain voltaveus wrote: Could one easily modify the weed burners that are commercially available at HD for trike mounted fire effects?

And how close to people.
I've been 30 feet away from some bursts and it's been too hot on my face.

Re: Bike Builders Unite
Well I crashed the Mongoose fat bike for the first time... I swapped on a set of chrome beach-cruiser handlebars and put the stock grips back on. I went to hop it up a curb and yanked both grips right off!
All of a sudden there was no bike.
Way back in my active BMX days we used to put hair spray on the bars under the grips. Is that still the hot setup? Do they still come back off when you soak them in hot water?

ouch!
(Where's the video?)
but it is a fun bike to hop
it can mess people up when they watch you continue rolling over whatever
(hair spray is new to me)
p.s.
there's an index added to the first post in that crazy long thread on the Dolo over in Fat Bikes at MTBR

I rode my REAL Mongoose today, for the first time in decades. There's still more clean-up and restoration to do, but it's rideable now.
