I look forward to hearing how well these pusher trailers work. Seems to me, there is a risk of the trailer pushing the bicycle over -- as in crashing -- if significant power is applied while turning. I hope not! But something to watch out for.
I have the rear half of a little mobility scooter that is essentially a ready-to-use pusher-trailer -- just needs the tongue added to it.
I expect such a trailer would work very well behind a trike.

Even with a trike, it takes a little learning.. Use a throttle and controller for safety..

Ordered a new Camelbak bladder, four comfy, colorful, sexy nighties, and four new strands of lights for coats, etc. Now I'm designing a pendant to get laser-cut for my camp.

mgb327, how could one get on a list to acquire one of those fancy passes?
They look like something I would gladly flaunt all week! (and then, throughout the year back in defaultia, at places like the Decompression, the Shpongle concert, Saguaro Man, the Montreal airport, along with various other venues.)
I have the material and time for my 2015 swag, but not the inspiration yet. Tough theme to depict. Better get busy!

I can send one out, but have a "limited" supply right now, hope to make "more" soon. I have to continue to find the materials. PM me a mailing addy and I can send one out.

I've been getting really tired of those khaki tarps for the carport, so am trying something different for our LA regional. It's a little tricky getting the sizing right, as the canvas tarps shrink after they're dyed.

Re: Work In Progress 2015
Those laminates are really fun, I think the glammed out lanyards are a perfect choice. And wow on that loom, Yggy, that's a fair bit of work... so so cool. And I like the dyed canvas tarps a lot, too! We started tricking out the front of our shade structures in 2012, and haven't looked back. We wanted to have a divider between the public and private space, but wanted it to look nice... so we started back then by doing a cityscape mural that tied into our "Fertile Minds Idea Deli" concept. I found a pic from setup in 2012 of what we did then.

Then from 2013 on we've used a blank canvas to act as divider (and windbreak), but then have a structure made from wood and fabric to act as display boxes, similar to the kinds of spaces you'd see in a museum or art gallery. My gf and I are already hard at work on making stuff for the display boxes this year.

Re: Work In Progress 2015
Judging by the detail in your work and the equipment you seem to have access to, it seems like you know what you're doing. One thing that would concern me a bit about your technique is the grain dependency you mentioned; wood is a great material but in small cross sections at varying grain angles, traditional material calcs are a bit unreliable at best. Would it compromise the simplicity of your design too much to add a plate to the inside of the joint? I guess it would be more of a cone, and it would have to be fabbed on a CNC machine, but it could be laminated plywood or something to remove the directional bias from your joint. Just a thought! those puzzle piece CNC joints are damn sexy looking, it just seems like you're going to need some strong assurances of the assembled strength to pull off what you're proposing.torrey.smith wrote:I'm starting to characterize the dry (no adhesive) and bonded strength of the joint in tension. Dry strength is important because I need the dry dovetail joint to support one structural layer before I inject the adhesive. This 1/6 scale laser-cut model (done in 1/4" Finnish Birch plywood) failed at about 18 lbf. That scales up to about 650 lbf for a full size piece, but I'm using non-plywood Doug Fir, so it will realistically be less than half of that, and very sensitive to grain direction. We shall see what the adhesive can do for us.

I like those divider tarps! How did you decorate them? I was looking into trying to paint vinyl tarps but it seems like it's really hard to do and not have the paint crack/peel off. Or is that plywood or something solid?

Re: Work In Progress 2015
mudpuppy000 - those are canvas tarps, we painted the murals directly on the canvas. The murals have held up well, though we no longer use them out front we've used them in the back area at camp for the last couple years.
Nice work, torrey! Does it work out that most of the parts are identical (save for maybe those top few levels), or are there lots of unique pieces?

Re: Work In Progress 2015
Thanks, trilobyte! This one has 3 strut types per layer (in the continuous pattern up to layer 9). They form an equilateral triangle (base-side-side), but the compound angles are different (the boards are split-difference normal to the ellipsoid) and the dovetails also create handed ends.
Starting at layer 10, I begin a lattice reduction that makes it more complicated. I also start adding in lateral offsets on top of the compound angles to account for struts coming in at significantly less than 60 deg included angle.
My maximum number of the same strut is 15 and my minimum is 5. There are 480 pieces overall, starting at 47.75" at the bottom and generally decreasing in length from there.
Many factors at work...

Any large burn will have to be preplanned, pre approved and for placement in the ESD burn calendar. There are a lot of things to consider for safety.forty_eight wrote:Can you burn the glue?
Something else like that came up. They say don't burn anything painted out there.
Does some of the big art have paint, tho?
Did Church Trap have some paint on it?
Did Embrace have paint on or inside it? Why so much black smoke from the Embrace burn?
This too off-topic?

30x45" traveling chalkboard: 18 gauge sheet metal, 1/2" ABS plywood back
3/4" brass bolts at each corner, brass 3" screen door handle.
Progress: holes drilled (screwed up one, will need washer)
sanded & primed 2 days ago, 2nd coat of chalkboard paint on today.
Heavy as fuck but super keen!

Re: Work In Progress 2015
Nice one, Robbi - I used that chalkboard paint stuff on a playa project a couple years back, it worked out great! I wasn't doing anything nearly as big, though, just a few 'deli specials' sandwich board signs (like you see on a city sidewalk out in front of a deli).
We've been making some great progress on a series of art posters for this year's installation. Last weekend we finished up #2 (of
, and we recently spent some time playing with a large format printer to both play with color calibration and run off some test prints.

We got something that we're pretty happy with, but are also exploring other output options. Last weekend I prepped a file and sorted things out with an output bureau to get a vinyl banner made up. The cost per piece is in the same ballpark, and if it turns out we like how the banner works out that might be the way we want to go... since that would be durable and reusable. Beyond that, I've been having fun making progress on the other designs as well. For one of the pieces I'm trying to tackle the idea of fluid rendering... something I've wanted to learn about for a long time, but this project gives me an excuse to do something with it. This whole series has also been giving me a chance to really hone my skills at texture design and rendering, and that's been both a lot of fun and given me a fair share of headaches. Onward and upwards though, I need to start getting going on my ziggurat design revisions and start working on making all the new parts...

I've been working on a new monkey hut. Entirely covered in crochet. I've made sleeves to cover the pvc and am a little over a third of the way through the cover. It will take 18 roughly 3'x3' granny squares to cover the whole hut. They'll be stitched to bungee cord for support and tension and secured over a white tarp.
The cat likes them.
