Not arrogant, but partly true I think. About the economic / military superpower. The saving thing is just too long ago for the past 2 or 3 generations to appriciate. And who th f are we, Dutch, just about 17 million people, in a country that fits 2 or 3 times in the Grand Canyon alone. To my opinion, we have to speak more than just Dutch, because it is only spoken in the Netherlands and a handfull of islands, far away from Europe. And economicly, we depend a great deal on the US. So yes, we need to speak more then just Dutch, for economic reasons. And kids learn this easy due to English lessons in school, from age 10 or so, and due to almost every tv shows and movies are subtitled. We hear the English and read the Dutch, and pick up easy the words.FlyingMonkey wrote:
And at the risk of sounding arrogant, there is a very good reason many Europeans speak English. We saved their bacon in times of war & are an economic & military superpower. Oh, and England is rather close too.
