Now that football is behind us and we don't have to hear from those idiots of the "Legion of Boom" anymore, how about some really good news? Pitchers and catchers report in 16 days! Your World Champion San Francisco Giants report to Arizona on February 18! Yes, everything is right with the world.

Some years ago I was writing a magazine article on the California Gold Rush, when I came across a fancy car with a personalized license plate that said something like "49er" on it. So I took close-up photos of the plate. And somebody walked up -- presumably the owner of the car -- and offered to pose with the car, and he had quite a crowd around him. But I had the shot I wanted, and the man was not dressed in cowboy hat or such, so I said "Thank you for letting me take the picture of the plate, but there is no need to pose", or words to that effect.
Only much later did it dawn on me that he might have been one of those popular gladiators with the "49ers" ball game business.

Well, 12 hours, I am home. We were ice fishing yesterday on a frozen lake in Michigan....25-30 wind, 5" snow, and no temp...as in: zero. The fish tasted heavenly last night, nice trip. The game was great, but I wasn't paying a lot of attention to it, as we were eating scallops, perch, bluegill and oysters. The roads home went from sunny and dry to blizzard white-outs. You know that aching shoulder pain from stress driving? I gots it. Trying to get back in the mood to make some more swag, sorta fell "out of the mood", ya know?

Pretty cool. I note that they do not actually believe in the superstitious stuff (of course), but are using the historic and colorful setting for modern rational purposes.

From the article:

This sort of thing might have helped me pay more attention in history and philosophy classes in school!

25 cents a pound for chicken, 15 cent coke, and 5 cent Big Plank cookies.

Yeah nostalgic in the sense that it's been close to 10 years since I paid that. Notice I had to use a coupon to get .20 cents off. Nostalgic to me were the years my dad gave me .50 cents to get a gallon of gas for the lawn mower and I'd ride my bike to the Mobil station a few blocks away, get the gas then go to the store across the street and get a Rocky Road candy bar with the change and still bring him a nickel.

in 1971 they had some gas wars going and I got it for .17 cents a gal.

In around 1974 or 75 I was outraged at .45 cents a gal.
