But Elliot, Q: I have an ancient Shimano 3-spd hub off a trike that is frozen. Rebuild or buy a new one?

Rebuilt involves time & heat and that means fire - not a bad thing - but what is melty up in that hub????

New one means parting w/ a hundy or so.

Hey Kill, When I was young we had a carnival come thru town which had a freak show. Scared the hell out of me. The always had this guy who could push eyes out like balloons. That scared me the most.

I took one of those apart once -- though it was probably its ancestor the Sturmey-Archer. And I found that numerous watches had given their life -- and tiny cogs -- to make it.

Less fancifully worded: The gear-shifting is accomplished with tiny planetary gear-sets.

Some of these hubs -- maybe all -- had oil cups, so I suppose the factory lubricant was somewhat liquid. But what is in there now....

Were it me, I might soak the whole hub in a bucket of kerosene or diesel or such. Maybe agitate once in a while, and change the hub's orientation -- all in the hope that the solvent will find its way in where it may do some good.

But with my skills, I would not open it. YMMV
