the culture has changed.
we used to be the outliers.
then we were the fringe.
then came the alternatives and the hipsters
after that, the MDMA/EDM crowd.
and now, everybody and their fucking mother.
so.....how do we change the Mainstream into Outliers?
lots and lots and lots of LSD.

Unless there were more than one (or I am about as misinformed as I would be listening to Brian Williams) you speak of our very own Mydearfriend! I remember her and Graidawg a few years back at Barbie Death Camp holding the banner cheering on people who were wandering aimlessly down the street. It was a laugh riot unto itself.FIGJAM wrote:A solo badass burner had very little room in her small car for a project.
She made a big banner that just said "Finish Line".
She got someone to hold the other end over a street, and when anyone crossed under the banner, they would cheer wildly for the person making it to the "Finish Line".
I find that more impressive than the 747.

I'm actually not that interested in the 747 project. It is going to need to raise a lot of money from a certain crowd, it will need to be stored near the playa and be used just 10's of days in its lifetime. And it, so far, lacks a higher aspiration as art. Finish line is exactly the opposite!

I couldn't agree more. Fixing bikes, free tamales, teddy bear bike seat covers, hell just about everything is wonderful and appreciated. I do 'Random candy' delivery in the far out burbs late at night. I dress in a See's candy uniform and offer after dinner mints to the people on the couches in center camp waiting for the show to start. I do crossing guard duty at the slowest intersections in the city. Ira pushes a cart of candy in the most fabulous costumes. Art cars hand out small gatorades and ice cold beers out at the trash fence. The big plane will be great to see but it's lost on me. It's not the biggest bang for the buck.FIGJAM wrote:A solo badass burner had very little room in her small car for a project.

Re: Hot off the presses.... Bloomberg article on Sherpagate
The 747 is already junked...its future before this was to be melted down for scrap (and ultimately that will happen). It's made of one of the most common and recyclable materials on Earth. The act of moving and refitting it will be massively difficult and expensive, but that's no skin off your nose, don't worry about it. And deciding what is art is always fun...if no one is allowed to bring a large out-of-place object to the playa as an exhibition, then I'm sad my art sensibilities were assaulted by those non-art pieces like the Pier, La Llorona, and the Big Rig Jig.some seeing eye wrote:I'm actually not that interested in the 747 project. Re: Hot off the presses.... Bloomberg article on Sherpagate
Big Rig Jig is probably the closest correlation (huge transportation device(s) altered for the playa), and that didn't move. It was however a fucking amazing piece of art. Someone wants to bring a 747 art car? Let 'em! Beats the fuck out of self-centered party-barges that are nothing more than MUNI buses barely draped with fabric, or things like the snobtastic Christina, something which the 747 project specifically says they don't want to be (we shall see).maladroit wrote:...if no one is allowed to bring a large out-of-place object to the playa as an exhibition, then I'm sad my art sensibilities were assaulted by those non-art pieces like the Pier, La Llorona, and the Big Rig Jig.

Yeah, but then it would have been a fast-draw hit piece. If Larry's and Danger Ranger's statements were December 17. and then he contacted them and contacted other people for reactions and sat down and wrote in order to make it cogent... and then there's working with the editor??? In a trade-off between speed and accuracy where should this have come down?trilobyte wrote:That would have been a really great article 2-3 months ago, when it was all newsy and topical.

I'm very particular about art. De gustibus non disputandum est. Good art and bad art create each other. It is fine for some to believe there is no bad art on the playa. And that is even a defensible position, just not mine.

Okay, but this is a mutant vehicle. Many are works of art too, but at heart they are just crazy improbable people movers. The ARTery people aren't the ones managing the mutant vehicles.some seeing eye wrote:I'm very particular about art. De gustibus non disputandum est. Good art and bad art create each other. Technically the DMV could reject this on the basis that it is made from an airplane, it still looks like an airplane, it's not mutated to the point you can't tell what the base vehicle was. But out-of-place conveyances have always been welcomed...there are boats driving around out there based on real boats, and they just look like ordinary boats. Are you going to tell Captain Goddammit to fuck himself because his boat still looks like a boat and it's uninspired?
