Arrival from the north
Sorry if this has already been covered, I couldn't find it!
My camp is travelling down from Vancouver, Canada. The RV-ers are renting their vehicles in Klamath Falls, Oregon, so I am using that as a meeting point for the group before we head down to BRC. We aren't applying for placement as we are not big enough.
Assuming the gate will open at 10 am on Sunday again this year, I'm trying to time my arrival as close to 10 as possible, to get in with a couple people and set up camp in advance of the rest of the group. I don't want to have to drive through the night from Klamath Falls to do this, so I'm wondering if anyone knows of a good campsite within a couple hours north of BRC so I can get some needed sleep and still arrive at 10?
Thanks!

Here's a thread you should check out. He has been generous enough to let burners stay at his place for free!!! The post I'm linking you to is older, but I see that he has made the same offer for 2014 on some other threads here. I think this might be in the general direction of where you're coming from. (Though I am geographically challenged.)

Re: Arrival from the north
Have a back up plan - gates opening on Sunday are never guaranteed. Nor is a time on Sunday. There are a few great places and some out of the way campgrounds just a few miles from Gerlach that kick butt. That time of year is also hunting season, but Smoke Creek road just to the North of Gerlach and running towards Susanville has some great camping spots on it.
Zoom out on this link to google maps. I have worked dozens of fires in the area and this is where we camp when in the area. Theres grass and trees as well so you will have some shade. Its a dirt road, but well maintained.

It was also on google street image as well...so you can see for yourself.

I agree. Eagles nest is far from BRC.

Re: Arrival from the north
Coming from a shorter distance we often stayed in an inexpensive motel in K-Falls and had breakfast or lunch before driving into BRC. Traffic is minimal. At 4 1/2 hours from BRC, it could be your meet, rest, go spot. Good for hotel and showers on the way back.
The Eager Wally's website lists other spots along the way.
If you travel a slightly different route to the East, or drive there from K-Falls, Summer Lake Hot Springs Resort is also a fine burner meetup incoming or outbound. There is public land, like Modoc, which might require some kind of vehicle camping permit, contact the ranger station.

Re: Arrival from the north
Thanks everyone! I found a place to stay in Cedarville, about 2 hours from Gerlach, just over the border in California.
Re: Arrival from the north
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm maybe you did...but I'd push through to Alturas. They like burners at the Wagon Wheel restaurant/hotel and there's also a Super 8. Cedarville is SO tiny.
Re: Arrival from the north
How long does it take to get to Alturas from the burn? I have a half dozen relatives there.

There was almost no traffic up that way on Monday. I'd say it was a leisurely 4 hours from camp (since there was no Exodus line either).Ratty wrote:How long does it take to get to Alturas from the burn? I have a half dozen relatives there.
Re: Arrival from the north
2 hours 32 min by Google maps, meaning: add one hour (plus whatever Exodus may take) because you'll be driving 40mph sometimes.Ratty wrote:How long does it take to get to Alturas from the burn? I have a half dozen relatives there.

Re: Arrival from the north
We're traveling down from Vancouver as well. We always spend our last night in Klamath falls (free overnight RV parking in the Walmart lot) and then just get up early (7ish) to drive the last 5 or 6 hours. We've never really had problems getting into line etc.
I see you found a spot in Cedarville - super nice folks there, Eagleville is close by as well and is a pretty similar place.
I'm curious on your RV experience in Klamath though - cost, availability and what your travel plans to get there to pick it up were. We always rent here in Van (Fraserway RV or 4 Seasons) and have had nothing but good experiences with them. The downside though is that each year we go we have to reserve the vehicle earlier and earlier - this year we had to reserve it before we got tickets, so a little faith had to come into the picture.

Good for you supporting the Cedarville economy. You can use the consumer business review site that begins with a Y and ends with a p to find businesses there and update their reviews for other burners.
