Return of The Poop About GOOP

Post by robotland » Wed Feb 18, 2015 2:16 pm

Although I failed to land a ticket in today's scramble I DO have designs on attending this year after having taken a year off...with that in mind I am reviving the thread about that indispensable gluey miracle, GOOP adhesive. Also known as Shoe Goo, it is marketed in different formulations for RV repair, wood, plumbing and myriad other incarnations but is all essentially the same product. The product resembles silicone caulk in that it's clear and gooey, and damned if it won't stick just about anything to just about anything else. (I haven't tried GOOPing fire to water yet, but everything else seems to work fine.)
A few tips:
-Look for the varieties that include a screw-on plastic nozzle, which is handy for tight spots. Or collect them until you have enough to make light-up teeth for your giant wearable dinosaur puppet. (true story!)
-a moistened finger will enable you to smooth a bead of GOOP and make a cleaner presentation. GOOP that dries on your fingers can be rubbed off like rubber cement "boogers".
-set projects to cure in front of a fan to speed up the process. Moving air helps form a "skin" quickly, although thick applications may still have a gooey center for upwards of a day afterwards.
-plan your project so that the GOOP can get air to it- If you coat the inside surface of, say, a bottlecap and stick it to something flat it may take DAYS to cure or not cure at all. Drill or cut circulation holes when you can.
-yes, you can paint it! Practically ALL of my masks and robots and other projects are aluminum bits GOOPed together and then primed and painted with good ol' Krylon spraypaint. (Krylon should have its OWN rant! Rustoleum has a nice consistency and some novel products but it takes a freakin' CENTURY to dry. Krylon is practically dry when it leaves the can!)
-prices vary on GOOP according to the specific product and location...between four and five bucks a tube is a good guideline. Don't buy the tiny tubes! Total ripoff!

....now go make something, dammit.

Wow thanks Robotland! Goop is (was) a mystery to me until just a couple of days ago. I finally punctured my tube that was in my BM shit for years (just in case), and repaired my beloved boots. The sole had pulled away from the toe leather at the front tip. I squished some in the ravine while pulling the pieces apart gently. Then I squished them together, smoothed out the seam, and held it together for a minute. Then I let them sit and meditate for a day. They work! I wore them and the sole held!
Better living thru chemistry eh?
Good luck This year RL!

Before last burn, my boots were all beat up and the rubber was splitting and pulling away from the soles in several places. I scrubbed out all the crevices with rubbing alcohol and a toothbrush, let it dry, then glued everything back together with GOOP and compressed all the gaps closed with tape and twine for a week. I wore them every day on playa and they held up just fine! The stuff is flexible so it'll stretch a bit rather than cracking and letting go.

the Magilla On Gorilla!
just played with CLEAR Gorilla Glue.... Sets up faster than the regular stuff, which is nice. dries kinda whitish, like "squeeze out" on Elmer's White Glue.
HOT TIP:
after dispensing, wipe tip with a DRY rag and squeeze air out of bottle before capping....this stuff is air and moisture activated (and not cheap) so this keeps the contents viable for longer.
don't get it on you.

Funny. I never heard of an adhesive named GOOP before.

I just remember the hand-cleaner named GOOP. Not sure what was in it, but it was good at getting ground-in machine grease and other machine-shop-type messes out of skin and clothing.
