Treatment of women at Burning Man and beyond
Re: Treatment of women at Burning Man and beyond
Today a close friend mentioned a friendly interaction with a cashier. Keep in mind that she's just a chill, friendly person and everywhere she goes, people just feel comfortable talking with her. You know someone like that. But she expressed a worry that she "might have been flirting" and that was why the guy was friendly.
I asked if she was, and the even more confusing answer was "I wasn't trying to, but (someguy) jokes that I do it all the time and that's why people do nice things for me."
So now I'm in trouble for calling him an asshole....

Re: Treatment of women at Burning Man and beyond
As a woman, I've experienced a lot of sexism, etc in my 60 years on this rock. In my 2 years as a newbie Burner I've never noticed any from fellow Burners. Sadly, what I HAVE experienced is age-ism on the Playa. I'm not a sweet young thing. I fail the young and cute test. So art cars will not stop for me so I can ride or dance or whatever no matter what I do or how I ask.
2015 will be my SO's 22nd Burn. (Yes, TWENTY-SECOND) Batman's not young and cute either, so art car drivers smile snidely as they drive on by or more common just pretend they don't see us at all. One guy actually flipped us off and enjoyed a laugh with his young and cute passengers. Only one member of the group looked uncomfortable.
So much for Radical Inclusion..........

Shadow cat I know that is so true. I've seen those rude drivers. I'm over 60 also and you may have to up your game to show the MV that you are not a tourist. I have a See's candy uniform and boxes of $1 store candy. If I feel like riding an art car I just 'suit up'. A cinnamon or butterscotch hard candy will get you through the pearly gates if St Peter has a sweet tooth. In general, wearing a regular costume, I can get a ride. If it's parked somewhere I can definitely get a ride but I'm usually not wanting to sit around and wait. I feel the key word here is costume. Who would leave a jellyfish stranded in the desert. No matter how old they are. Plus knowing a few people with cars doesn't hurt.

Re: Treatment of PEOPLE at Burning Man and beyond
As i get older i am much more aware of ageism as well.
Im now over 50, and the weirdest thing ever is talking to people and having them address me as "sir".
I dont feel any older, but i am.
Long ago i realized that our elders were fountains of youthful information.
One day i hope to spout fresh waters to be drunk by the youngin's, that is if they dont ignore me and laugh as they pass by.
Word to the wise, one day, you too, will grow old.
Just remember that.

Re: Treatment of women at Burning Man and beyond
There are 70,000 individuals at the event, each different. Some patterns I have seen: some seek family - on a peer basis, free of perceived power dynamics, which could include age and wealth. Some are in mating and flirting mode, and each has their own personal aesthetic, immune from judgement. or political correctness, though enlightened individuals work on that personally. Some are very much interested in acting and experimenting with identity, clowning, play, costuming, many variations. Some are after risk. Act with them. Many to most have novelty-seeking personalities. So be novel.
Be smart about these things and connecting to other burners on shared terms, and withdrawing and finding others if your spidy / empathic -sense is telling you it is not working. If you are a person with that sense, a smile, eye contact, a simple complement, proposal of intent, patience and acceptance of the response, with a thank you is what's needed. If you are a person without that sense, maybe find a friend with that sense to discuss it and practice. A majority, but not all, are tuned to microexpression and body talk which eludes expectations of justice.
Grok the need and desire of each individual you encounter and gift it as you are able. And then engage or move on as appropriate.
So what Ratty said!
