I have to say, its nice to see that with enough bitching and moaning by the community, the BMORG can still be made to respond in some fashion. Of the 2 primary complaints (JT remaining on that board and commodification camps receiving special treatment via-v-vis the placement process, both have been addressed). Score 1 for the non-douchebags, finally...

While I'm glad this happened, I'm still worried about the "concierge camps" (is that what we're calling them now?). That's wonderful if they live up to the standards of theme camps, but its still someone actively profiting off of the burning man brand and now it comes with the explicit backing of the organization.

And as board members travel the speaking and festival circuit, the message seems to be that we're just another festival. I know the stated intent is to spread the ethos of burning man, but I'm wondering if we're simply spreading the aesthetic without the message.

Burning Man IS just another festival now, half the people who go have never been been before, have no concept of the ethos, more and more people are suplying the BM package, from concierge camps for the wealthy to playapods and hexyurts for the less wealthy - with tickets selling out in hours and reselllers advertising in places like groupon, stubhub ebay and more. Our alternative festival is now mainstream for a lot, the sound camps get big name djs and acts to put on a show famous people pull strings to get in first camp.
Commercialization is now a fact of life at bm and will get worse once larry sells the brand and retires. Its inevitable do we think capatalism will simply ignore us? Millions get spent on BM by attendees, expect to see brand name companies on the road to bm any day soon, selling suppies in gerlach and empire for those that didnt stop in fernley on the way in.
