Going in 2016. Help!
I've already decided that I will be going to my first burn in 2016. I have lots of time to prepare, but I'm having trouble figuring out the best way to get there from Florida. If I fly in, I'd have to get most of my supplies and transport in Nevada. Driving straight through is also a possibility, but my main question regardless of how I get there is what are the absolute essentials that need to be brought to Burning Man. I'm especially unclear about the food aspect, and sleeping arrangements. Any information is most appreciated.

Kudos for starting early.
There's a ton of info here on the logistics of air travel.
As an east coaster who usually flies in, you can do it on your own, but it's much easier if you join a camp.

Camps are usually open for anyone to join? I'm assuming ePlaya would be a good place to look for possible camps to join.

Re: Going in 2016. Help!
There are a wide variety of camp types. From small camps with just friends or family, up to huge villages that often welcome newcomers.
Check out our theme camp forum for some info. Better yet, sign up for your regional group and go to some local meetups or events. http://regionals.burningman.org/regiona ... h-florida/
There are many benefits of (good) camp life. Shade, shower, transportation help and a ready made community.
But there are lots of people who prefer the freedom that solo camping allows. It's all up to you.

Almost every question you have has already been answered here: http://survival.burningman.com/
After you read that, you can then start asking questions about anything you didn't understand.
BTW Welcome to eplaya!

In my signature below, there are some good links for you to click. Also, the regionals that were previously mentioned are a great start for you to meet folks.

Re: Going in 2016. Help!
Welcome.
As mentioned there are a ton of posts on eplaya about this, but here is a quick rundown.
I'm an East coaster who flies in - food will be readily available in both Reno and Fernley unless you have some strict dietary needs.
Sleeping arrangements can be as simple as a tent or as elaborate as an RV. All options can work, it really depends on what you want and your budget.
The search function here is not the best so when searching it is better to use Google, search term - eplaya food - for example.

Re: Going in 2016. Help!
Pro search tip on how to get the best results from google - use this format: site:http://eplaya.burningman.org your search words (no spaces between "site:" and the website address, must be the full URL, not just "eplaya", search terms can be boolean).Drawingablank wrote:The search function here is not the best so when searching it is better to use Google, search term - eplaya food - for example.
This works for any site, and will limit results to only ones on eplaya about your search term, as opposed to "eplaya food", which will pull up any results that mention both eplaya and food from any website, and if you don't use boolean terms it can pull up any post that mentions eplaya OR food (which, in a quick check of the first page from google with that search, includes eplaya, facebook, an unsecure and apparently spoofed site on an amazon server, reddit, a couple of personal blogs...). It works, just not as elegantly (yes, I have to do a lot of site-specific searches, not just on eplaya)

Re: Going in 2016. Help!
Camps are usually focused around providing some sort of interactivity to the general public. Many of them have people that have been camping together for years so they can be a little tricky to join. Your best bet is to find one that you really like what sort of interactivity they are providing and then express interest in helping them with that. Try not to ask what kind of services they provide to their campers as that tends to make it look like you are camp shopping.Warbaby Fox wrote:Camps are usually open for anyone to join? Re: Going in 2016. Help!
I've got a decent little tip for you. Sacramento is only about two hours from San Francisco and two hours to Reno. People, especially those coming from overseas and the east coast, often only consider Reno or San Francisco, consequently those two cities are often impacted with high demand for things like RV or auto rentals. If you can find airfare that is similar to landing in Reno, you might have an easier time securing a rental in Sacramento without competing with everyone else. Sac's prices for things like food and supplies are infinitely cheaper than San Francisco and roughly the same as Reno. As an added bonus, Sac's thrift stores are stocked full of great, dirt-cheap costumes and supplies right up until the burn, while Reno's stores are overrun with thousands of people competing for the same stuff. I think there's even burner express bus service from Sacramento.

The Sac Airport is also a lot easier to get in and out of then San Francisco.

Plus, if you buy in Sacramento instead of Reno you won't be contributing to the Nevada economy and its "live entertainment tax."

Re: Going in 2016. Help!
You should start by first reading the survival guide. Even the one from last year (a revision for this year will be published in the summer. Then read the first-timer's guide. Both are really required reading, just to start. Then start doing some additional reading. This site is organized by categories - so if you've got a question specific to food & drink, that would be the best place to look for answers or post the thing you can't figure out (if you don't see it listed), and transportation for how to get there, and so on.
A lot of folks make lists, not only of stuff to buy or make, but just the various pieces of the puzzle. You'll find a few threads on the boards where people either share or discuss their lists - read those, learn from them, or just use somebody's existing list as your starting point.

Edit: I guess the embedding is working.....
Here is a link to a prep list. It's all encompassing and more than you will need. I parred it down for my use.
And another on the other end of the spectrum......

@eldergeekas Thank you for sharing that thorough spreadsheet. I was in search of a solid list of everything you could possibly need to bring for Burning Man and this exceeded anything I was expecting. It's very useful, and I plan on referencing it more as the burn approaches.
Re: Going in 2016. Help!
Interesting. The OP posted this in April of 2015 and has not been back since July of 2015. Not sure he is going to benefit from the help being offered.
Just FYI. When I entered this thread, it triggered an attempt to install "ServiceLogin", which was blocked by my settings.

Nope, Can't take credit for it! Found it during my prepping. There are a few dupes in there but it covers damn near everything.
Like I said, I parred it down a few pages for my use. Finally started crossing things off it rather than adding items to it. LOL

Be sure to mention the city you're leaving from. Good luck!
