Road Warriors...

Post by Lydia Love » Wed Sep 24, 2003 8:09 pm

So... I've never taken a solo road trip - but it looks like I'm going to have the opportunity to do so the week before thanksgiving (have to go visit those grandparents, doncha know)

If you had 5 days or so to meander around the western states where would you go? Are there any wacky "mystery spots" you'd highly recommend? Gorgeous views? Roads to avoid? Anyone want a polite houseguest for a night? All advice will be considered, but of course I can only drive one actual route.

I'll have to be in Utah by Thanksgiving but I'm probably striking out from the Seattle area the Friday before.

Drive out to San Francisco via I-80, cut right and come home via the coast road. Beautiful vistas, redwood forests butted right up to roaring surf, some funky little wide spots in the road. Willits is great. The drive-thru tree is on US-101 and you pass through Bigfoot Country.
There's a cool dinosaur park just north of Brookings, Oregon — concrete dinosaurs prowling amidst the redwoods and ferns and streams, gotta love it! They do a decent job with the paint jobs, too. Cool gift shop, not all kiddie stuff — they even have a "glow-in-the-dark dinosaur skeletons" t-shirt for sale :)

First, get a copy of The Bad Girls Guide To Road Tripping. Don't leave home without it.

The Mystery Spot/Oregon Vortex near Roseburg, OR

The 24 hour church of Elvis in Portland.

Spend an afternoon in Ashland, OR. Maybye go see a play, but it's a fun town to wander in.

Wed. night karaoke @ Rosies in San Francisco (I despise karaoke, but this place does it right)

Visit a friend in NorCal...It's harvest time.

Cougar Hot springs outside Eugene.

OMSI in Portland.

Exploratorium in SF.

a) come see some friends in the SF/Bay Area. . . a hot tub to soak in, a futon to sleep in, and some great company.

b) not sure what road/weather conditions are like in November, but one of my all-time favorite places in the western states is SW Colorado, around Ouray.

No longer exists. Most sad, as it was a Portland landmark- but Stevie (the owner) started going around the bend mentally. Her brother is the homeless guy that wears the Elvis costume around town, he lost it a long time ago and apparently it runs in the family. She was fine, got a degree, but over the last year or so started becoming increasingly paranoid. It's sad, but shit happens.

If you do hit Portland, go to the McMennamin's Kennedy School. A grade school built in 1910 ish that was converted to a microbrew pub, complete with cigar bar (the old detention room), juice bar (the old honors room), hot wading pool, and 2nd run movie theatre with couches were you can order food and beer.

Oh and Powell's book store if you're a book junkie.

yeah, but while I'm evangalizing the pleasures of the flesh they'll be evangalizing the pleasures of the afterlife...

At this point I prefer subverting the *easy*.

Ma'am, eye'um E-Z. If you stop by Santa Fe look me up. There's plenty of overpriced yet strangely bad art here.

Plus you can see me in my acting debut. I just got my role assignment. I'm playing the Adjutant, Fat Woman (!) 2nd Man, Biggest Boy and Nephew for a total of 15 pages of dialog, woo-hoo!

As a ex-mormon boy & staunch jackmormon I can assure you that your evangalizing will win.

Some videogames don't require money to participate. Whereas pinball machines, like established religions, always do.

And the machine always keeps all your money.

Two hours of mostly gorgeous scenery east of Salt Lake City is Strawberry Park Hot Springs http://www.strawberryhotsprings.com/. Well worth the extra seat time in the car, if you can spare it. If you're goin' lemme know when and we can meet up there!

Mesa Verde in southwestern Colorado is one of my personal favorites, if you're going to make it that far.

When I first saw this thread topic, I thought maybe it would be a forum for those of us who have to travel a lot for work to announce when we'd be showing up in other cities. . . so I'll just hijack it temporarily. . .

I'm headed for Seattle tonight, from Denver (where I got to have dinner with Booker!). Unfortunately, I'm only in Seattle briefly for a wedding tomorrow, and then flying back to SFO to meet the bay area eplayans at the Folsom Street Fair. . . probably no time to get together with RebA and Glenn and other Puget Sounders, but I'll be thinking about you!

Coloradans beware: It's likely that I'll be back in Denver the weeks of Oct 6th, oct 20th, Nov 4th, and Nov 17th. Might be in LA instead for the week of Oct 6th though. I'll keep you posted, and try to arrange some joint drinking opportunities.

If you do meet up with any Mormans be sure to get a photograph of their undergarments. I couldn't find any pics on the internet.

But occaisionally they'll tell you how some friend of a friend's holy underwear saved their lives...

I may burn in hell but I can't resist...grew up Mormon myself, its a respectable lifestyle if you happen to be with a family that is open-minded enough to see the world for all its variety rather than the sometimes encountered "our way is the only way" holier-than-thou types...and the ones around sure do make a lot of noise. Anyway...got to cut back on the ...'s but if you've seen a plain white cotton t-shirt and knee length white boxers you've seen the equivilent of the "holy underwear", although one piece "union-suit" versions are available too. Stylin! Nothing physically special, just part of the rites of the church to near always wear the stuff for life. Mostly its a modesty thing, your clothes are supposed to always cover the underwear so no short-shorts, topless dresses etc. etc...(which is why my mom was gasping at my playa pictures "oh my, they're not wearing much are they?!") Of course I run around naked or nearly whenever possible now heheheh : )
