Your Uncle Don sounds kind of like my grandfather, another war veteran and outdoors fanatic. All the new things I'm learning about Grandpa, now that the web and google exist so I can find records of his work (he was a prize-winning press photographer for the Chicago Tribune). Enjoy the news (can it be news when it's old? :-) ) about your famous relative; it's cool, isn't it?

my grandpa worked in the mines of west virginia. every friday, (payday), grandma would meet him at the gate to collect his paycheck, before the hookers and alcohol got it first.

He was my dads brother and that side of the family lived in Washington, so I knew a little but not the war years.

My grandmother was a music teacher, so the kids learned music.

My dad and his brother had perfect pitch and I think were the first to do an overdub so they could make a record with them singing in 4 part harmony even though there were only two of them. 8)

That's a great article about another one from the Greatest Generation

I think I posted this a few years ago.
My grandfather on my dads side fought in WWI against the United States and the allies. After the war he got married and my grandparents came to the states legally via Ellis Island. My dad spoke German until he started first grade. When WWII broke out, my grandfather wanted to renounce his US citizenship and move from NYC and back to Germany and fight for Hitler and the Nazis. My grandmother wanted nothing to with it. They had three children, my dad being the oldest. They stayed in the US and lived happily ever after. My grandfather worked for a dairy in upstate, just north of the city. That's about all I know of that account. I learned this when I was in my early teens and never asked questions about, probably because at the time I could care less. Now I wish I knew more

interesting Catman!!
my step dad (a father to me in all senses), was UDT in WWII and landed on Normand on D-Day. Had your GF gone back, they may well have shot at eachother!!
My GGF was an early settler of Reno. Anderson Park there is named after him, as is Anderson Peak, near Donner Summit.

That's just as interesting as well. I know there's an Anderson Hill on 395 north of Reno, between Stead and Cold Springs as you go north from Reno. Could there be a connection as well? I don't know if it's a local name or if there's some historical significance.
A good friend of mine from school lives in Moberly, MO his GF and mine could have shot at each other. His fought for the US and allies whereas again mine fought against the US. My GF was born in Hungary.
One day I'll get brave and check that ancestory.com
