This is probably my favorite tool in my collection although I have never really found much to use it for.

I made it from scratch as it was the final exam when I studied to be a machinist. The entire thing was made from a 20 inch piece of steel bar stock.

I really need to clean it up since it has been hanging on my workshop wall for decades. Will have to take some Hoppes #9 and a brass brush to it.

That thing looks like a very portable and primitive jaws of life!!!

Well I have wooden parallel clamps like those shown, but the one I made is only 7 inches long so of limited usefulness.

all my stuff is old....I'm not sure what I'd do with a new tool or machine. I think it's also sort of a challenge, keeping them working and the "tricks" needed to make them do what you want.

Nothing wrong with new stuff, and technology, just saying I like to tinker........

Makes me wish all my stuff wasn't in storage, at the moment. I love my '49/'50 Craftsman bandsaw I picked up for $50 a couple of summers ago...

In Junior High metal shop (I doubt there are any now...liabilities/lack of funding) I made two chisels, a ball peen hammer, and a screw driver. Used them all until last year when I gave them to a younger person who appreciated their handmadeness and would maybe some day give them to another younger person into doing stuff and not having a big chest of tools...

They were my favorite tools, but a wise man once told me "...get rid of your most beloved objects and open yourself up to new possibilities."

I didn't make this tool, but it has character as it clearly is hand made, and there simply is no power or hand tool that can do what this tool does (I don't even know what it's called!):

It's called a draw knife or spokeshave.

I think it was originally used to shape wooden wheel spokes. I just use mine to round off wood before sculpting these days.

I have 2 of these... one just like this, and one with hinges to adjust the angle of the handles. If I were home right now, I'd post pics, but, instead, I'm tasting of The Kraken for the first time, with our Sweet Delle and Company, and I must say, I'm 3,000 miles away from my drawknives (or spokeshaves). When I get home next week (if I remember...HA!!) I'll just Do That.
