No, and I did mean to ask. Follow up next Tuesday will give me another chance.

It has been a couple weeks since you made this post. Because a growth on the tongue can be either nothing or something, I for one am interested in the outcome of this event. From memory I think the tongue heals faster then any other skin area, but is constantly exposed. my best to ya fishy, and if you don't mind, please let us know how things have worked out.

Why do people back their cars into parking places?
I can understand if you're getting drunk at a roadhouse, it's easier to leave when you're drunk, but at a grocery store? Come on!

I bore witness to someone being asked this question. The response was (in not so many words):

In pedestrian-congested areas (like grocery store parking lots), it is easier to see and avoid pedestrians if you drive forward out of the parking space than if you're backing out. It's not as big an issue pulling into the spot because you're already out in the lane where it is easier to see.

I notice that few people doing this are capable of backing in.

It is not an efficient use of time, unless towing or some other special purpose.

I go with visibility, too.
Especially in my truck, and if the vehicles next to me are high profile.
I'm 8' into the lane before I can even see if anyone is coming along (or stopped flipping me the bird by then).

About 30 years ago I picked up the newspaper and there was reports of 3 children being killed in the few days before. They had all been run over by a relative in the diveway of their own home. So, I started thinnking about it. When I drive up to my house I can see if there are any obstructions so I can safely backup into my parking space. Then when I go to leave I am driving forward.

That seems to make sense, except the folks I see backing into parking spaces look to be the type who'd run over a kid and worry more about their scratched fender. :)

so, this science vs belief vs social norms, vs greed.....etc, etc.......

I was in a conversation yesterday and a subject line arose that was, to me, interesting:

We see, all the time, people denying what we perceive as "pure factual science", and often on the basis of belief or "common sense", past experience or whatever.

But, when we consider how so much in life is presented to us, and the longer we live, the more this happens:

We are fed contradictions and reversals of opinion, by "leading" science or great minds of some sort.

We're told sugar is bad, fed Saccharin, then told it's bad, given Aspartame, and so on
We're told butter is bad, so to margarine, then back to butter.

Marijuana is medicine, then, it's "Reefer Madness", now, it's a medicine again.

drink bottled water, it's pure and better.
Nope, bottled water is not as safe as tap water, and you are evil for drinking it, let alone making it.

in the 70's it was global cooling, and we saw, or were told, the Soviets were spreading coal dust across Siberia, to raise the temperatures through solar absorption, then it was global warming, and we need to change the refrigerant in our cars A/C.

We'll be out of oil soon *70's again*..........and yet, it seems oil is everywhere, if you just drill deep enough, or frack for it. but, we have not run out, as predicted.

IIRC, AlGore said we'd all be dead in 10 years or some such, if we didn't make drastic changes.......no real drastic change, and yet here we are, for now at least.

Communism(or socialism) is the way of the future, Communism didn't work, Oh, others are doing it, it works, just that the wrong people tried it the first time.

I"m sure this could go on for a long time.
But what I'm getting at, is, often we've been told something is fact, proven, and people are derided for not believing, only to some years later, be proven wrong and told to change again.
So, many become skeptical of information, that is new and "just discovered"

thalidomide?
valium?

Thesis, anti-thesis, synthesis.

You need to be able to separate all of the things you have mentioned into one of these categories:

Science: The intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment. (Global Warming should be specific to this category, but unfortunately in pushed into the "propaganda" for profit and politics.)

Propaganda (either for profit or control): Information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view. (The Butter vs. Margarine falls into this category, as does Saccharine and sugar and most recreational drugs.)

Magic (religious belief): The power of apparently influencing the course of events by using mysterious or supernatural forces.(Unfortunately, this is often why people fall for propaganda and are so concerned about certain medical procedures.)

If both propaganda and magical thinking were removed from the equation, you would not see any of the inconsistencies you mentioned.

Truth, Lies, and Fantasy would be another way to name the above categories; and the human species seems drawn to lies and fantasy as science is too difficult to comprehend.

IMHO of course. ;)

"global cooling" and "global warming" are old terms for the same thing: Climate Change.

Personally, I don't have kids, and never will have them, so I should just take the republican "don't do anything, because who knows" stance on this, I mean why should I care what happens to the planet when I'm gone? Honestly, the planet will be fine - it'll outlast us and all life currently on it, and will outlast any life that evolves on it in the future. Climate change may cause life on the planet to get fucked for a while until something new evolves, but whatevs. Not my problem.

Probably because most people would not volunteer for a job that works in such close proximity to shit.

Why would you even worry about those people? Let alone allow them to make you feel badly. That's really all on you. I'm pretty sure those people are in the minority and probably people that have never been to the event. Personally, I take your job as one of an educator. And I enjoy the signs and all the other things you do. But I've been to the event many times and know how important that job is. If it were me, I'd tell them to fuck off and be on my way.

You're not wrong.

For what it's worth the sit down and chat I had with you at the meet and greet last year was a highlight of the week for me. I felt like I was getting a private audience with a playa superstar. It was a privilege and an honor to hear you tell your story and the way you talked about your work was super inspiring.
