Bannerline Project for the Man 2015

Post by Killbuck » Mon May 11, 2015 7:42 pm

I am thrilled, excited and honored to have been asked to create a set of traditional sideshow style banners for the outside of the Funhouse Man Structure this year!
Work commences this week. The project will consist of 30 to 32 traditionally styled, hand painted banners, most being 7 ft high and 10 ft wide. These banners will fully surround the structure comprising the Funhouse maze around The Man.

The banners are being created at The Generator Community Art and Builder Space in Sparks NV. I have assembled a set of painting walls and am gathering a small crew of local painters to assist with this stupidly ambitious painting project.

I'll try to pop into this thread once in awhile to provide updates. Meanwhile I have a very rough schematic showing the extent of the project, and photo from The Generator with the first blank banner primed for painting. In addition are a couple images showing the style of work I do in banner painting.

Now THAT is exciting. Last year I studied the man from afar as they struggled to put his head on. THIS year I'll be out there every day checking for fresh beauty. Congrats on the commission. It will be priceless.

Please contact me if you need any minion assistance. I'm not a painter per se, but could be relied upon to be very careful like with interior trim type work. Free M-wed.

Killbuck, these are really great. I absolutely love the style and form.

Will we be burning them with the structure? Looks like they are on canvas so I'm guessing not. Where will they go? :D

Yeah that was one of my first thoughts! They'll be beautiful so it would be shame to see them go up in smoke but at the same time there will be so many of them and they're so big! I hope something cool is done with them so they can live on.

Cath and I have already signed up! As volunteer minions, we're hoping to learn about the process and maybe get some ideas for a banner for our own camp.

They will be mounted to the maze structure after it's construction, and removed before the burn.

Yesterday was the first of several group work days for the project. Volunteers are coming to help with tasks like rolling out and rough cutting the material, marking and grommeting, hanging and priming, and rolling on basic border colors and elements.

2/3rds of 32 banner sections are cut and grommeted.
7 banners are trimmed and primed
6 of those have border colors applied
2 of these are now moving to the finishing wall.

The material is the new type billboard vinyl. It is primed using a bonding primer. Once dry, the border and header areas are lined in and colors rolled on. Traditional banners typically used an orange border and a yellow header The border element were then lined with a royal blue. Once the border element are in, the banner becomes a "blank" to which the character and lettering work is completed during finish painting.

All banner shown here are 7 feet high and 10 feet wide.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of paint or pigments are you using for this? My regional was trying to paint a vinyl carport cover, and every type of paint we tried started flaking off when we gave it a weather test.

Many of the carports are made with a polyethylene laminate material, and that type of plastic doggedly resists paint. The only thing I can recommend trying is to prime the material first using some type of bonding primer. One type is KILZ. The brand I like is called Bullseye 123 Primer. I'd give that a try, as painting on that type material without a primer bonded to it will always fail. Because the covers must be aggressively folded to transport.... you may still get cracking and flake off.

Because my banners are never folded, always rolled, this lessens chances of damaging the paint. A tent- carport? Can't avoid having to fold.

Billboard vinyl can be painted successfully with minimal problems. The newer make is thinner and lighter. Primer should be put on the printed side. The bonding primer will grab far better than on the unprinted side.

I use latex paints and acrylics. I recommend not applying the paints thick. Large areas covered using sponge rollers. After dry, it's best to apply a clear flat or satin sealer. Sealer should be 110% dry before any rolling of folding.

Progress moves along- in fact, better than anticipated.

By early June, I expect that all 32 banner sections will be cut, grommets installed, hung and primed. So far, near a third of the 32 total banners have their border colors on or are in progress. 4 are headed to finish painting in the next few days.

These are going to have such a sense of fun about them Killbuck, as all of the work I've seen of yours seems to have!

On a technical note, do you use an overhead projecter to get your images blocked in on the banners?

What will become of these beautiful banners after they are taken down before the burn? Will they be sold or auctioned off (back home of course) as a fund-raiser for next year's project? They look to be real works of art.

I'm planning to take the banners on a tour of the outer solar system.

In seriousness tho, they will prolly go touring... I'd like to take them to Decom in SF, and there will be some show opportunities. After that I'll consider options.... but first they must be painted.

This project is moving along very well, and still slightly ahead of schedule. Below is a recent conceptual of the intended look- without some of the other cool stuff that is being planned for the structure, and the midways surrounding at each promenade approach.

To enhance participation and interactivity, there will be a few banners where you and your friends or fiends.... can put yourself into the image.

THINK of the possibilities!!!!!
