Fundraiser: Bombus Regius Airship Art Car for 2015
Hello lovely burner community.
Our camp, "covered in bees" a 7 year Esplanade Bar & Lounge plans to bring something exciting to the playa
A giant bee themed Airship Art Car!
We have been planning & building the vision for several years, we have the skills, the team, and a dream.
We really need community support next, to make it happen.
The plan is to build our lovely Bombus Regius ( royal honeybee ) at NIMBY makerspace in Oakland CA starting in a few weeks.

Looks so cool!! Really well thought out!
Re: Fundraiser: Bombus Regius Airship Art Car for 2015
Thanks ! I think we need a whole fleet of airships, but i'm biased, need to make good ol airpusher our sister ship
Re: Fundraiser: Bombus Regius Airship Art Car for 2015
A few years ago I read a science fiction novel where a relatively primitive people traveled to a closely neighboring planet with balloon ships somewhat like this. They simply ascended to the midpoint between these twin planets, which shared an atmosphere, rotated the ships 180 degrees and descended to the other planet. (They lost a few during the rotation maneuver.) I regret giving the book away, and now I cannot remember the title or author. Ring a bell for anybody? I'm thinking this novel could provide material for the Bombus and crew.

Elliot, that thing is magnificent! Surely we'll join the fleet soon.

But can they get it off the ground?
Seriously, that would take a h*** of a lot of helium, and I don't think they'd want to re-enact the Hindenburg at BM. So it's a good thing it will be a car and not a real airship.

Just out of curiosity, how are you going to anchor that beast down when the high winds arrive? Seems like it might want to go airborne then. Or is it really heavy to prevent actual flight?

I was recently informed that helium is non-flammable and in fact fire-retardant, so no Hindenburg-esque fire catastrophes would occur from filling it with helium (the Hindenburg was hydrogen-filled, which is very flammable). But... my buddy from Airpusher told me helium would be way to expensive to fill their balloon (or whatever one calls that part of the airship-artcar), so I am guessing Bombus Regius is probably leaving the helium alone tooapavlin wrote:But can they get it off the ground?![]()

I'm always curious about projects, and would love to take a look around your Airship. Where at NIMBY are you building? I'm usually around on Sundays, mind if I stop by and introduce myself?

come on over and say hi, we havent parked the truck over at NIMBY yet, expect to get the project physical build stage in the next two weeks
and that is correct,
fun fact, Originally the Germans wanted to surround their hydrogen dirigible ballons with helium in a two bag system, this would have helped prevent disasters such as the Hindenberg, however, the united states refused to export to them enough helium!

Congrats on all the funding progress. I'll keep an eye out for your project. I'm assuming your avatar is actually you, so I will look someone who looks like that. Good luck on getting the rest of the funds.
Have you spoken to the folks at NIMBY yet? Some of the more permanent residents have been telling me that they are not taking in as many big Burning Man projects this summer.
