Hello from Berlin!!

Post by Horstipupsi » Sun May 17, 2015 5:09 am

Hello there! Im from Berlin, Germany and Planning on losing my burginity at the burn 2016 (I'll be 21 then).

I'll be living In the SF area in the summer of 2016 and wanted to attend Burning Man while there! I've only heard and seen amazing things about BM - and honestly can't wait to contribute to it myself!

I am planning on soloing but had a few questions regarding that.
1) As ill be living in the states for only half a year, would you suggest buying a car/van for the whole stay or would you rent one exclusively for BM?
2) And how exactly does ticketing work? Is the only way for me to get tickets the individual sale? Or if I preregister, do my chances on getting a ticket rise?
3) how exactly is BRC built up? Are the camps "in" the city right next to the tents and camps where people sleep?
4) if I arrive by car I will need a vehicle pass. But will I also have to "design" it to enter the city? Or is that only if I want to drive around during the burn?
5) How do I know where I will set up my camp? Do I get to choose freely upon arrival or will I be given a certain space?
6) is there a way for me to help without being part of a camp? Aka gifting besides the small everyday gifts such as cleaning up MOOP, helping out fellow burners, etc?
7) has anyone heard of a German burner community? If so, do you have any tips on outfit shopping or would you do that upon arrival in the US?

I'm really looking forward and don't want to wait so looong :? If you have any question/answers, feel free to answer and/or message me! All the best and have a great day!

Welcome David. All your questions are good ones. Most people want to get a feel for how things are laid out before entering the city. The most obvious thing is that you cannot drive around one you are in your camping area. Your vehicle must be extremely mutated and registered to drive on the playa.

Many of your answers can be found in my links below. Also, you can use the search feature on this site in the upper right corner. 16 months should be enough time to pull all the details together.

Good luck with your plans and looking forward to seeing you in the dust in 2016

Welcome.
Savannah: I don't know what it is, but no thread here escapes alive. You'll get 1 or 2 real answers at minimum, occasionally 10 or 12, and then we flog it until it's unrecognizable and you can't get your deposit back.

Hi David, So many questions. Good thing you have a lot of time to prepare. If you're living in the SF area you can easily find a rideshare to BM. You won't need your own car for that. I can't speak to whether you'll need a car for your daily life. It depends on where you live, work or go to school. This board and the Burning Man website are the places to start. Read as much as you can then come ask us questions. We can help you here.

Ticketing is tricky. There are no guarantees. A lot of veteran burners are still trying to get tickets. If you want to know how it worked this year go to the board index of this site. then find the ticketing info. There should be a link to all the dates of all the ticket events. It won't do you any good to worry.

There are 1,000 ways to volunteer. You can become part of a project before the burn or wait till you get there. (That would be my suggestion. Wait.)

You can find aerial photos on this board that will show you how the tents and RVs all fit together. Don't worry about outfits or 'costumes'. Try and focus on your survival equipment and the general idea of what you will be doing when you arrive. Don't stress and be grateful you have so long to figure it out. Welcome to eplaya.

I'm pro-costume. Make in-person connections to SF burners and they can advise on that, and your other questions. You may even find you are invited to camp with some. Berlin is an art and experimentation city and Black Rock City is likewise.
