Nice work, Captain! It reminds me I need to make a similar shifter for one of my kinetic kontraptions, only this one will have four cables and no detents -- for a pair of NuVinci hubs to operate in sync.

Re: Bike Builders Unite
I just took it out and rode it... works great! That Hurst handle is really heavy but the detents are solid enough to hold it firmly in place. And it's got SO much more attitude than the little plastic bike handle.
You know, I spend a lot more time in the garage working on my bikes than I ever do riding them. Same with my hot rod car. And my mutant vehicle. and...

Re: Bike Builders Unite
I couldn't stand the stock plastic cover on the shifter, so I made a new one out of a chrome bathtub overflow drain bezel. It involved a whole lot more drilling, grinding, filing, cutting and shimming than it would seem, but it looks way better.

Re: Bike Builders Unite
Almost done with the trike. The motor mounts to the side of the box as a friction drive.

I like the trunk! I don't like the shopping cart looking wire basket on the First Mate's trike.
I gotta find me an old steamer trunk!

Thanks, Capt.... All of the electronics/batteries are in the bottom with a false bottom over them.
Leaves plenty of room for carting crap around.
And thanks, Elliot for brightening the pics up....much better...

I put a zip tie secured huge stuffed unicorn in the rear basket of my Schwinn-based electrotrike under construction to deter some dusty hippie from hopping aboard as I pass and maybe bending my rear axles. I can't put anything permanent back there as I need the basket to haul my safety gear to ESD 3 for my duty shifts.

Having an axle issue and haven't been able to match my schedule with my friend that can help solve the problem. ticktockticktock....Elorrum wrote:oh my, Sadie, it's been a whole month since you posted photos, and just now I've seen them. Re: Bike Builders Unite
Today I'm testing the electrical drive on my Worksman tandem trike. Pretty much had the best 4 day weekend hanging out and working on it, jammin tunes and drinking beer. I'm feeling very connected to the community this year and want to thank eplaya for being part of the experience.
The Worksman is stock. The Golden Motor front hub drive and the front fork luckily were a plug & play solution. Only required a couple of sleeves and bearing swap. I mounted a rack under the seats, salvaged from an old hitch rack. This will hold the four 12V 20ah batteries and chargers with additional room for a cooler and sound. Right now everything is held with ties for testing.

Re: Bike Builders Unite
Elliot is it true, no one can ride it at all?

Re: Bike Builders Unite
Yes, pretty close to it. I think I saw one of the CycleCide guys ride one at Maker Faire a few years ago. I took the idea from their bike.

Sounds like a challenge. I think I can ride it. But I might have to be quarter hammered.

Re: Bike Builders Unite
Elliot have you ever been able to ride it? It's one of those things that everyone just HAS to try, and it seems like you could do it but I bet it's nearly impossible just like in the video.

Re: Bike Builders Unite
When my current trike dies, I would like to consider building my next trike with the reverse steering.
With a trike, it might not be as difficult to re-program my brain. And, it would be fun to watch someone try and steal it who did not know it was reverse steering.

Re: Bike Builders Unite
You could make it shiftable... I have the steering reversed through gears on my Land Yacht because it has rear steering and it would be counterintuitive to drive it. My original steering setup used the lower unit from the boat's original lower unit from the outdrive, and you could shift it from "intuitive" to "counterintuitive". It was kinda cool.

Re: Bike Builders Unite
Interesting observation from many show-n-tells with the big tricycle:
The handlebar reaches two feet rearward, and the ends are connected by a curved mid-section. In other words, it is a segment of a steering wheel. When kids ride it, and I tell them to turn left, they usually turn right. They obey instruction just fine, but they have never used a steering wheel, so they do not automatically rotate the top of the steering wheel to the left -- they move the piece they have in their hands to the left.

Re: Bike Builders Unite
Just a thought.... To switch the steering between normal and opposite on a large vehicle, you could use hydraulic steering and simply plumb in a manually operated valve that changes the direction of the flow. And I bet you would find such a valve on any vehicle with hydraulic drive -- and reverse.
