Volunteers for "Penny The Goose" Project
My wife and are working on a large art project; a 14 ft tall by 22 wide Canadian Goose that is covered in both Canadian and American pennies. You may have seen her in 2013 when only one side was done. Now we are finishing her. We are looking for people who might want to join us either on weekends and/or Tuesday night to help with the tiling of the pennies. You can see our progress on Facebook here:

Sorry I can't post a photo but I have never learned to put one on this page. If you are interested, please PM me and we can talk. We are here in Hayward California so any Bay Area people would be welcome!

Here's a photo of Penny from the last time she was on the playa:

That's very kind of you to do that! Penny will have a different pose this year. More upright, with Head and neck stretched up as if she's greeting the sun.BoyScoutGirl wrote:Here's a photo of Penny from the last time she was on the playa:

Wow! Any idea what she's "worth"? I can't wait to see her in the sun!

Penny is beautiful! One of my favorites from 2013; so pretty and weirdly enough, fun to touch. (I hope that's okay!) And yes, I was sober.
I wish I was anywhere near Hayward; I would totally help!
Make sure to post where she'll be placed.

She was designed to be touched. We wanted that tactile experience for people as well as the visual. Actually, she's pretty stout. An Art Car hit her in 13 (don't ask me how!) The guy was nice enough to leave a note apologizing all over the place. But other than a few pennies falling off (which we glued back) she was fine. No climbing though. That's a no-no.

Here's to goosing the goose.

Re: Volunteers for "Penny The Goose" Project
Well, many thanks to Lonesomebri for assisting in laying down pennies this past Tuesday! A fine fellow who jumped right in and was productive right from the start. Made a big difference in our progress. If anyone else is interested, we're usually here on Tuesday nights and weekends, with more days planned as we get closer. PM me and I'll give you the straight dope.

The joy of discovering my true life calling. Finally had the satisfaction of finding a vocation that fits my skill set and temperament. Something that I am good at, something I enjoy, something where others recognize my abilities. Gluing hundreds of pennies to an 18 foot wide Canadian Goose made out of steel.

Re: Volunteers for "Penny The Goose" Project
Missed it last year. Looking forward to seeing it in 2015. (How much do you guess it weighs? And are you keeping count on how many pennies?)

Re: Volunteers for "Penny The Goose" Project
Don't have a weight yet. I do know that it takes 182 pennies to make a pound, based on the newer ones. And we have a rough estimate of 120,000 pennies in total for both sides so the weight of the pennies alone is about 650lbs.. But the true weight I won't know till I put it on the scale. BTW I want to once again thank LONESOMEBRI for laying pennies last night. He is a HUGE help to us! And a great guy to boot.

Just like the Burn itself, I get to be a part of something fantastical that I would have never ever even conceived of on my own.

I wish I was near you. I would love to help. Do you know where she will be placed on the playa? I'm going to make a point to see her. Missed it the last time. Some much to see only so many miles to pedal. Keep up the great work!

Re: Volunteers for "Penny The Goose" Project
Penny is almost there! The front breast and body had the last pennies laid on Tuesday. We stood her up last night and she looks fantastic if I do say so myself. Big thanks to all that helped with the penny laying especially Lonesomebri who worked tirelessly on the project. Just some final touches left and then she travels to the desert on the 28th. See you there!

So the chick in the blue Subaru Outback who gave you the enthusiastic thumbs up while passing you on the 80 just before Vacaville was me. I wasn't sure how to mime either "Jovankat" or "ePlaya" so I just when with the thumbs and stupid grin combo. Penny looks FUCKING AMAZING by the way!

Penny looked great on the playa, and I was the mute bearded guy at the Boomtown KOA giving you the thumbs-up as you pulled out. Wonderful project, congrats to your whole team!

Re: Volunteers for "Penny The Goose" Project
So, here's the thing. I volunteered for like maybe, maybe a dozen hours. No stress. Complete ease. Making something great, but without any responsibility for the mental labor of it's creation.
Out on the playa I get my name on a plaque next to the bird. Every time I ride by I see the people enjoying it and wondering at the pennies. Maybe 20 or 30 times I stopped and, clears throat, talked to people admiring it, maybe even pointing out my name on the plaque. Now there are photos everywhere of the goose. People thanked me for it...
People actually think that this volunteer transaction is about me giving, and not completely receiving.
I would recommend to anyone who is selfish and vain like me to volunteer on some art piece for next years Burn. And if you are a good person, you can do it for that also.
What a deal!!!!!!!!

It was a pleasure having you as a penny layer Bri. She doesn't get done without you and your name on that plaque is well deserved. Thanks to all of you for your kind comments. Penny made it home safe and sound and is anxious to get back out on the road again. She's headed to the American River Music Festival next weekend. Again thanks to all and we'll see what we can dream up for next year! (Mr and Mrs Ferguson Art)Lonesomebri wrote:So, here's the thing. I volunteered for like maybe, maybe a dozen hours. No stress.
