Re: DJ Art Cars And Their Effect On Art
I really don't love Libertarians, really, or Anarchists, which are the same.
BM rules come from 3 places at BM. 1. Pure logistics, 2. Imposed by LEO and BLM, 3. Imposed in order to get insurance/ lessen the chance the event will be sued out of existence.
Libertarians and Anarchists believe the magic hand of the market, Lord of the Flies, universal individual clear thinking and self interest will replace all rules. Without 1, 2 & 3, the event would end period.
If you would like to discuss a rule you don't believe comes from 1,2 or 3 maybe we should start a separate thread.

Re: DJ Art Cars And Their Effect On Art
I don't think the in city and other sound rules came from BLM or LEO or insurance but due to some camps thinking that blasting music day and night was their gift to their neighbors. This was what created the 2/10 sound camp zones and then the decibel level restrictions. As someone that was camped across the street from the Ghetto Bus that decided that no matter what the time or even if their bus was parked in camp, their gift of music so loud we could not talk except by screaming in each other's ears, I was happy to see the levels set.

"It’s important for you to understand that the complaints about your sound levels on Burn night are serious and include complaints from two Burning Man founders, several members of the DMV Council, other Burning Man staff and the DMV Manager (Wally Bomgaars) personally. It did drown out music from other nearby mutant vehicles."
Re: DJ Art Cars And Their Effect On Art
I just read the email chain and, wow, what a bunch of self-righteous, egotistical dickheads.DrYes wrote:[link removed] - The full e-mail chain between them and the DMV, provided by Dancetronauts.
DMV Hotties: "Here are specific allegations and complaints, please respond accordingly."
Dancetronauts: "But you don't understand, we are the only camp that brings multi Grammy Award winning artists for free for burners to enjoy. Oh, and we don't do drugs or drink alcohol."
Only when the writing was on the wall, did they begin to apologize and express contrition.
The best part of it all, of course, was the shoutout to Simon and the notion that he, somehow, was singlehandedly behind this. Oh, and that ePlaya was to blame for scapegoating them. Jesus, get the fuck over yourselves.
Second best part was when Cpt. TravNasty misspelled Chef Juke's name. Probably not the best way to endear yourself to someone.
And, of course, at no point did they address the fact that they were already on probationary status. As if, somehow, this was all news to them.

Re: DJ Art Cars And Their Effect On Art
The part 2 of the burners.meh article calls out a few ePlayans in this thread by name with cherry-picked comments (including me). Not a big deal, I definitely lashed out with the pitchfork comment in response to Dancetronauts' whiny and fallacious defense post on Facebook. But it was a pretty minor comment compared to the heartfelt first-hand accounts of those who felt massively disrespected by Philthy Phil (the captain of Dancetronauts who should know better...not some clueless guy they let play by accident) during the burn.
I've read many of the articles on burners.me and felt that some good info was being dug up and presented. I felt it was a disruptive, yet useful outlet for some of the things that needed to be said. I appreciated the aggregation of all the various sources of info on Sherpagate and other issues.
However, this is one case where I have direct experience both with the events in question and the community's response. And burners.me is twisting the facts in order to craft a lie about things that can't be proven or disproven: emotions and motivations.

Holy shit... I'm only halfway through skimming part two of that atrocious article!
Now I'd be the first to admit, I love me a Burning Man scandal but J. Harvey Christ what is Steve's problem here?! I mean, we all know he's got some kind of mega boner to pick with the borg but how much that guy is shoving his head up the ass of the DancetroNOTS is blowing my mind right now.

and, by the way SSE, as someone who would describe themselves as an anarchist I'd like it to be known that some anarchists do believe in 'rules'. Only we call them social agreements and they are consensus based rather than imposed. And this is not the same as libertarianism.

The followup article was interesting in that it gives you insight into how the outrage sausage is made.
What was a fairly innocuous thread about the antics of one MV, gets chopped up into a conspiracy salad that is frankly way more interesting than a few concerned burners writing complaints to a bureaucracy.

Quick mod note - do not either post the leaked emails or links to the leaked emails on this site unless you have permission from the sender - they will be removed. Thanks
Outrage sausage and conspiracy salad - I love it! Thanks for the laugh
Speaking personally, I feel like the art car has been whining and complaining and trying their damnedest to use the blogger and social media in an effort to play the martyr, but that the community has yet to side with them. If anything, I think most of the page views and traffic they've been boasting about have been coming from people who feel that it's about time. Either way, I think the timer's running down - the self-serving blogger will move on to his next exciting conspiracy theory or anything else he can to drive traffic (the most recent article pretty clearly paints a picture that the most important thing is that people think he's important).
I hope that happens quickly, because I don't think it helps the art car. Instead of winning supporters, they're digging a deeper hole, and I don't think continued (or increased) bashing on them is very helpful. I wish them the best of luck, and hope they're able to get past outrage or feelings of martyrdom and see some of the public feedback and reaction for what it is. If they do, it seems the course corrections they need to make for next year are something they could pull off.

Even though their scene isn't my scene, I agree. Though my instinct is good riddance, I'm reminded of one LNT blog post I remember reading that showed how a camp could go from Red to Less Red to Green. Even a bad offender can be reformed with hard work and honesty. I may never skate at Black Rock Roller Disco, or dance at Dancetronauts, but lots of burners enjoy them and if camps can get better at mooping, MV's can get better at containing their sound (Audio mooping?)trilobyte wrote:I wish them the best of luck, and hope they're able to get past outrage or feelings of martyrdom and see some of the public feedback and reaction for what it is. I IM'd with Travis, their co-owner, for awhile chatting about it. I think he's genuinely mortified and committed to doing better in 2016, though given that he advertises himself as a 'social media guru' on LinkedIn, he sure could do a better job of communicating his contrition in a way that doesn't come across as sometimes too defensive. On the other hand, they were somewhat combative in those emails and I didn't feel like the BMORG was unreasonable at all. Contrition is less impressive if it only comes after the light shines on you I guess.VultureChow wrote:Even though their scene isn't my scene, I agree. Not to mention spell words correctly
It seems some good has come of this; on some of the threads & on Facebook other sound MV operators have posted saying they are going to seriously revisit their sound policies, including one that pretty much agreed with the criticism.
Burners.meh has really gone overboard with this one. If Dancetronauts was really contrite I thing they'd stop posting links to the blog posts on their Facebook page.

Re: DJ Art Cars And Their Effect On Art
The problem with it being a group is that it's going to be the loudest one who gets heard, and right now the loudest one is pouring gasoline on the fire. It's not reflecting well on the group, because there's no way for the average person to know that the loud one is just one opinion - especially when he's doing it from their official page (I run facebook pages as part of my job - I know how important it is to keep "the brand" looking good, which he is absolutely not doing). It doesn't matter how contrite Travis is when his partner is burning bridges. All the owners should get together behind the scenes & try to figure out how to deal with the negative PR they themselves created, or it's going to bite them in the ass. IMHO, of course.DrYes wrote:Well, it's a group. I only spoke to one of their co-owners. I find Outtrim to be so incredibly obnoxious. Trying to create a scandal out of nothing. Dancetronauts weren't banned from the event. They had their DMV permit denied as I'm sure countless others have as well.some seeing eye wrote:The burners.meh site is funny. They are the Fox news of the playa.
Driving your mutant vehicle on the playa is not a right. It's a privilege afforded to you by the DMV.
A few years back, Robot Heart performed miserably on the MOOP map. They didn't receive placement the following year, but cleaned up their act and enforced great LNT and now are in "good standing."
This ongoing conspiratorial nonsense perpetrated by burners.meh makes me want to vomit. And then posting screen shots from ePlaya as if to prove something? Come on, man, grow up.
I get the impression that Outtrim derives more pleasure from his hyperbolic, melodramatic blog then he ever got from attending TTITD. It's time for him to move on to a new hobby.

As for D-Naughts, the art car was kinda cool and I can't remember being assaulted by sound burn night. Then again I wear ear plugs and have other noises around me. If they did in fact break agreements in the contract year after year then they deserve not to have that contract renewed at the discretion of BMOrg. Seems kinds simple to me.

DJs "acting" like douches... wow, I am shocked!!!!!!!!!!
...if only they were contrite... ...not so vain...not so entitled...not so pompous...in other words, not DJs.
I'm watching a hummingbird in my backyard, is it "acting" like a bird? At what point is it not an act?
Some things are simply what they are.
Birds gotta fly...
I enjoy seeing things for what they really are (this is why I always refuse the offer of a drink from a DJ or HIS entourage), and here in the light of day, without the loud "gifted" music blinding everyone, what do we see?
