Yet, it can be fun to lead the noobs down the proverbial primrose path before the hammer falls on them.

We have a nice young man who was added to the drilling staff a few years ago.

His 'introduction' to our sometimes warped sense of humor on the job took the form of the standard "Getting to know you" interview. This interview is not graded, there is no pass, no fail, but the results.....can be hilarious! The man is from a predominantly rural part of the Ozarks, and we found out a little bit about him. Then the fun began. We had found out that his father was the county sheriff there.

I set up the question:

"So you Dad's the sheriff, right? Ever go on patrol with him when you were a kid?"

His response:

"Oh yeah, all the time......."

Then the driller lowered the boom on him:

"So, didja hold Daddy's hat while you were in hot pur-suit?

Nailed a la Smokey and the Bandit.

The young man called me "old" just once. He STILL doesn't know where the word "whippersnapper" came from.

He shoulda looked in the mirror.

Things change. I used to get searched all the time because I have bagged or labeled rocks in my carry-on luggage. The TSA used to tell me 'not to do that again'. However, I'd rather have rocks in my carryon than have to pay for an overweight bag. So, it's not illegal, and I ignore them.

I just watched an episode of The Ed Sullivan Show--in black and white no less--on PBS. WOW did that bring back some memories.

I can remember when the police officers I knew as a kid still engaged in community policing, when the fire fighters solved problems by spraying water on them, when politicians tried to do the right thing, and when doctors knew the meaning of the phrase "I don't know" as opposed to "We need more tests...".

Today, the police are militarized, the firefighters use leaf blowers at brush fires to blow back the debris, and a lot of the so-called celebrities have all the talents of an overripe kumquat.

I remember when my pediatrician ( I was that young once, back in the 60s) MADE HOUSE CALLS!

His kindness and his humor will never be forgotten. I cried a few years back when he finally passed away at age 90+. It doesn't surprise me one bit that, in his time off, he used to go to villages in the mountains of Taiwan to assist local doctors with medical care of pediatric cases. And he paid for the trip out of his own pocket. He realized that we can all make a difference in some way, and then he went and did what he could do best.

BUMP!

I remember when we were kids and if we did something really wrong
we got spanked, sent to bed without dinner or given a lot of chores to do.

Today, sadly, that is considered child abuse.
