I remember La Contessa. It was a beautiful gift and artwork that ultimately proved to be incompatible with the Burning Man event.

My understanding is that La Contessa was conceived to be dark driving at night, violating DMV regulations and that they consistently ignored agreed upon DMV speed limits. I believe they were banned after the same burn Katherine Lampman was lost to an MV accident, which a friend witnessed. In 1996 I believe 3 were killed in vehicle accidents on the playa. Again one in 2014.

So the word of DMV is playa law and you cannot argue 10 principles or TAZ against that. They work hard, are fair and turn down vehicles each year. La Contessa was banned despite a close relationship with the BORG.

Plenty of people complained against the ban then with the same arguments we are hearing today about the Dancetronauts. And La Contessa claimed in the same way they were "special."

The difference is, La Contessa really WAS special and the Dancetronauts are just a commercial bunch of douchebags. In my personal opinion.

It's a lot like the PnP discussion which changed the direction of the event. The MV misbehavior problem is the same. A lot of money used to build bigger and bigger (louder and louder) sound systems which think they can operate outside community values.
