Re: Playa Events Calendar = Fail
As usual, LonesomeBri, you're reading the wrong stuff between the lines. My mention of amateurs (as in calling the WWW the Amateur's Guide to Burning Man) is all about pointing out that the printed book only has the tiniest sliver of events listed, and that those events aren't even necessarily the best ones. They aren't necessarily the worst ones either, they're just the ones that were entered first.
Since you may seem to be confused, I'll clarify... when I refer to something as a pro tip, or something as amateur on this board, I'm not referring to someone who's made a career or profession out of the event versus someone who has not. It's meant as personal advice to getting more or better information (or a better experience).

Re: Playa Events Calendar = Fail
Bri, Trilo is just being generally derogatory about how some people burn versus how other people do it right. It's not about employment status or how long you've been burning, it's that doing it how Trilo does it is the right way. Anyone who likes to browse the book and pick out a few events that sound interesting and try to make it along to them is just less evolved as person, that's all.

walks into a discussion "hey by the way what you guys are talking about is for amateurs"
gets confused when people respond defensively to being called amateurs. Needs to clarify that his way of doing it is better.
And who's the amateur here?

Re: Playa Events Calendar = Fail
It's not an insult that the WWW guide gets called the Amateur's Guide... it got that nickname because it seems to be used most by people newer to BRC that haven't yet learned about "Playa Time", the real clock of BRC. Frequently the best times are had spontaneously, and scheduled events you were heading for get sidelined by something-or-other that happens along the way. A lot of burners eventually quit bothering with the WWW book.

Since you seem obtuse, let me clarify, this^^^^^ is exactly what I am referring to.trilobyte wrote:...Since you may seem to be confused, I'll clarify... when I refer to something as a pro tip, or something as amateur on this board, I'm not referring to someone who's made a career or profession out of the event versus someone who has not...
Having stuff in the book is fun. Sure, it isn't correcting others or showing some superiority over other events, but that is what you have eplaya for. I have several events in the guide, I probably won't even look at it other than to revel in my own entries. I understand that when you see someone walking the dusty road with their nose in the guide, you are looking at a new participant. But I also know that it is too late to get an event listed at this point, as per my post that was needless corrected because someone is trying to see where I am reading wrongly between lines instead of simply reading what I wrote.
Here's the thing, for my events.... I only want amateurs to attend.

Re: ePlaya Events Calendar = Fail
I was the one who brought up the numbers, so I'll respond to these:
Eric wrote: 1500 event entries accepted, so far. Trilo posted somewhere that less than 1,000 entries made it into the print guide last year. That may change this year, but even the PlayaEvents page says "If you submit early, your event may get printed in the What Where When" (emphasis mine). I wish everyone luck, but I don't want people to assume guarantees of getting in the printed guide where there are none.
I was going off of this (from 2015 Placement newsletter #6 sent June 17 2015):Lonesomebri wrote:
The Bmorg said there was going to be 1500 print entries accepted this year. But what was said about last year?
No one said anything about there being a guaranteed place in the guide, well, other than the post by others I quoted originally (which wasn't corrected or clarified, odd), and it being brought up again round-about in the quote here above assuring everyone that there is no guarantee where I never claimed there was...
It's a good point that the print guide doesn't necessarily follow what Placement claimed. I checked just now, and in 2014 Placement also said the guide would print events submitted before July 1 or the first 1500 events, whichever came first. If there were <1000 eventually published, one must logically conclude that either a) <1000 events were requested to be printed before July 1, or b) they cut it short of 1500 for some reason. The on-line submission form and directory will be available through the Burning Man event, but only the events submitted before July 1st, 2015 -- or the first 1500 received, whichever comes first -- will also be included in the What? Where? When? guide, the printed playa events listing that's handed out at the Greeters' Station.

Re: Playa Events Calendar = Fail
And to be explicit for those of you who care about the OMG SO IMPORTANT question of whether you will be printed in the guide:
I believe the following must be true for your event to be printed (my beliefs only, not from anything official):
- You marked your event public
- You submitted the required <150-character print description (longer ones allowed for web-only events)
- You pass event moderation
- You submitted before July 1 AND are in the first 1500 events fulfilling the 3 conditions above
- (Placement's statement about 1500 entries remains correct)
In my original post I was assuming that people had done everything right if they wanted their listing in, and that Placement was correct. Either of those might not have been a good assumption. :p Also I could have stated them explicitly but I forgot I was dealing with ePlaya. Sorry. Won't happen again.
I personally believe that numbers 15000 or more might still have a shot, since not every event will qualify. But if a camp didn't want their event printed, there's not much motivation to jump on it the day it opens, so I don't think numbers higher than 15500 have a very good chance.

Re: Playa Events Calendar = Fail
As everybody knows this is not my first rodeo. Actually I went into the Events calendar to list the ePlaya Meet & Greet. But when I tried to sign up, using my Burner Profile, it did not work. Then I tried to re-register and it said "Please enter a valid value". What the hell does that mean?

I thought we no longer list the meet and greet outside of eplaya after the 2011 locust swarm.

Re: Playa Events Calendar = Fail
Did anybody else have problems getting items into the print guide ?
I'm talking to BMORG now and they don't seem to be aware of the server problems. I entered all my events by 1330 PT but some didn't get in for some reason.

Re: Playa Events Calendar = Fail
How can you tell whether or not an event you submitted has made it into the guide?
Also I did notice some of my events took longer than others to make it through the moderation queue and they didn't go through in the order I submitted them so that could be it.

I'm guessing you won't know whether or not you are listed in the print book until it is published and you can view it on the playa. (Or somehow manage to get an advance copy.)

That's what I expected but marcgorcey's comment suggested otherwise and now I'm intrigued

Yes, you can click on 'my events' and it shows the events that you have submitted. I was told that I had no remaining items in moderation either so I have missing entries.
