I helped work the perimeter for that! Exactly what I thought of when I saw the phobia post. Most people had NO idea that an actual bomb was going to explode that night and shake the whole city. That's why it was awesome, but yeah, I suppose terrifying for others I'm sure.

I loved the explosion & the flash-over and was hoping that there would be a second one for emphasis.

I was around so many "red/yellow fiery swooshes and big bangs" early in my adult life that it takes a lot to get me to blink. This one did not make me blink. But, it sure got my attention.

Do it again this year.... ? Please - Please - Please

Bottom line at Burningman: most all of the fireworks are set off by competent highly trained pyrotechnicians who are more into the 'blinky-blinky, shiny shiny syndrome' than they are about the explosions. It's a technical thing. Do you know how much chemical experimentation it took to get a deep blue pyro color? Quite a lot. To them, it's a challenge to get the show to synchronize with the music to where what they create is unique visual art.

This is the best I've seen yet:

Add to the fireworks the light synchronization and the multiple locations of the shots, and the sheer massive amounts of fireworks employed, the result is friggin' AWESOME!

Blinky-blinky-shiny-shiny at its best.

Big explosions outside of the military have to be carefully controlled - that's why there's a safety perimeter to make sure no one gets hurt. They only use enough 'boom' to get the effect desired. Compare 'Crude Awakening' 2007 to the 1988 PEPCON blast in Henderson, Nevada:

At PEPCON, no control. $100 million in damages, and an earthquake registering at 3.5 on the Richter scale. Film was from a TV crew atop a nearby mountain at a distance of 7 miles.

You've got nothing to fear at Burningman.

Rhino,

I was living on Denver Way in Henderson (on that side of Black Mountain) with my house facing Pepcon. After the smaller first blast, I went outside and was watching when the big second blast occurred.

When I saw the blast, I knew what was coming next and I laid on the ground. When the shock wave arrived, it blew out my front glass door and peppered my back and legs with glass. The final toll was $18,000 worth of damage to my house. No problem with my insurance company. However, the builder had a real problem re-attaching my rafters to my wall framing.

you know, this could be the best thing for you....to get out of your comfort zone, and face something that you are afraid of.

personally, i love the explosions, and here's a little story, before burning man, i was terrified of needles, but, because of my desire to attend, i took a dare, and got the first of many tattoos.
Burning Man was also somewhat responsible for my first tattoo. I wonder how common that is? I'd bet we're far from alone.
