Re: Eplaya meet and greet 2015! Wed 6PM
Saw earlier conversations about absinthe being a favorite at the M&G. I'm local to St George's distillery in Alameda (well, a 45 minute drive local) so I bought some there, but Drink Up NY has a number of good absinthes and they ship all over the US. I'm currently stocking, in addition to the St George's, Pontarlier, Vieux Carre, Butterfly, and Pacifique. I can recommend all of them, properly louched of course-- usually a 4:1 ratio of water to absinthe.
I can't bring enough absinthe for 100 people, but I can bring some to share.
I usually carry absinthe to the playa in pint mason jars-- they don't leak, they don't contaminate the absinthe, they are very portable. Of course, they are glass (albeit very sturdy glass) and they are kind of awkward to pour from. I bought a nice little stainless steel flask, thinking to use that, but have read online that even stainless will give an off flavor to alcohol if it's stored in a flask for over 24 hours. What's your experience with this?

When packing my stuff for regional recently I came across half a flask leftover from a regional in October. No appreciable difference in taste that I noticed.
Savannah: I don't know what it is, but no thread here escapes alive. You'll get 1 or 2 real answers at minimum, occasionally 10 or 12, and then we flog it until it's unrecognizable and you can't get your deposit back.

And here I am. I always stop by Total Wines & More. They have a reasonable absinthe selection at "reasonable" prices. My experience, which has been long documented and verified, is that as long as you can get it really cold (like keeping it in your freezer) cheap absinthe is every bit as good as the expensive stuff. And for me cost is really no object but I still will buy the $28 bottle over the $68 bottle most any day.lucky420 wrote:Doc Pyro would be one person to answer this ^^^^ hopefully he'll be along sometime soon...

The Utah state stores have a dismal absinthe selection, mostly Lucid and Absenthe. I got Mephisto once, love it, can't find it anymore. May be time for a bootlegger run into Wendover or Moapa.Dr. Pyro wrote:And here I am. I always stop by Total Wines & More. They have a reasonable absinthe selection at "reasonable" prices. That's actually high-stylin' for us here. Canadian Absinthe is wormwoodless (and truly, who does Absinthe for the taste alone, really?). We've been using our "one bottle per person" allocation with each border crossing for this purpose since I discovered I loved its wiles a couple of years ago.AntiM wrote:

Last month had a very sad day in it when, on pulling out my just opened bottle of Kubler, a large casserole dish slipped its footing, dinged the bottle and sheered the bottom right off - spilling the near full contents onto the floor.
Actually, it may have been a very good day for the cat... He has been sporting an odd grin since then.
Edited to admit a horrible ignorance. Having just looked up the laws on absinthe, I found that Canada's laws are WAY more lax than those of the U.S. -- just not in my province. This gives me huge hope of finding a way of having some good stuff mailed within country. I'll tip a shotglass to that!

I always drive through Wendover & we usually stop for food there. Do you know of a good liquor store?
I'm bringing lots of homebrew but I wouldn't mind getting a nice bottle of Absinthe to share.

We now have a craft distillery just down the road. YES!
Wood Hat distillery....Montgomery County whiskey.
Anyone want me to attempt to bring?
I'll be there in whatever mood I'm in, just stoppin' in to see what condition my condition is in. Feeling punny and redundant and all that.

He's really a nice guy in person. At least that was my impression from the short visit I had with him.

I made it a point to swing by and give Simon some schwag the last year Root Society was on playa. We'd met before out there, and wrangled a bit here; he's a sweetheart with a really hard row to hoe.
I did NOT give him a hug.
I don't think he does casual social easily, so I wouldn't hold my breath on his appearing at the MnG. (although we'd all love to see him there, I'm sure!)

Indeed, I've met the man. He came by to see me at the Beacon once. His idea of casual social is exactly that....he's casual about being social. Either you get it or you don't in his opinion. The man is intelligent to the point of genius, but he did smile once while we were at our best insulting each other. It must have been an 'off' day for him, when he could relax just a bit.gaminwench wrote:I made it a point to swing by and give Simon some schwag the last year Root Society was on playa. All said and done, if Simon ever came to me seeking relationship advice, I'd know it would be a put-on. I make it in relationships like Yugo makes automobiles....poorly.

I got a picture of Simon on the playa last year.
No, really, Simon gave me this picture last year during a random chance encounter. And a hug. No shit. We gave him a cold beer. It was very playadipitous.
But like the Playa Chicken, he can vanish into a puff of dust when you think you see him out of the corner of your eye.
No, not Big Cock. Although finding him is chancy too.
