I've been getting emergency notifications all week on my phone for flash flooding in my area. Last night I got one for a dust storm! Weather in Northern Nevada is plumb crazy this year!

"There is a conditions related event (Road Closed) on SR-447 in both directions in Empire, Washoe and Pershing Counties, Nevada. Road is closed between 8 and 13 miles south of Gerlach due to flooding. There is no estimated time of re-opening. Use alternate route."

If you're talking about the Cinabung volcano video, yes. The reason is they're at such a distance from the pyroclastic flow that it's hard to visualize the flow and just how dangerously fast it really is. Contrast that with the pyroclastic flow that took place at Unzen, in Japan.....

The coordinates for the city have been posted. From what I can tell moving the city ~1200 feet down the 6:00 road from last year is going to be a negative for playa surface conditions, especially the inner playa.

My take:
North to south is 10:30 to 4:30, identical to last year.
The Man moves ~1200 feet down 6:00 to halfway between last year's Man and Esplanade.
The distance from the Man to the esplanade is the same as last year, meaning the overall city size did not increase.

I interpret that to mean the city has been moved south, not north. Thus, that would put Esplanade about where G was last year.

I'm curious, how will it affect the conditions? The playa is all flooded at some point during the year, is there a huge variation in playa surface? I didn't notice a significant difference between the playa out at the Temple or back of the K streets.

Maladroit I was on the playa last weekend for Juplaya. I posted some pictures a page or so ago in this thread. Last year's city is still very clearly noticeable. You can see where the streets are worn down flat and you can see where camps were and it's very far from being flat, there are fluffy sand dunes covered in a very fragile crust. This was on the 3:00 side so it might not be as bad on the other side but there was also some areas that didn't appear to be messed up because of the city rather just generally less than ideal on both sides of where the trash fence would have been.

Correct. Marching down 6. No twist. I had posted this in another thread:

What would be super cool would be a gif that shows from a fixed position above the movement and growth of the city foot print over the years. I don't have that kinda know how though.

That is a perfect example of what late spring/early summer rain does to the Playa.

Any rains in warm months after the freeze/thaw cycles compact the playa just makes it corn-chip crunchy out there.

Doom is a pretty good prognosis for this year. Dust masks and goggles.
