Recommendation for Bicycle Seat

Post by JohnEBGud » Mon Jun 29, 2015 12:27 pm

My current seat is about to fall apart, so now's the time to replace it with one that will be more cheek friendly on the Playa. Anyone have specific model recommendations or more general comments on choosing a new seat like Gel vs Foam, split vs full, etc? Thanks!

I would highly recommend a large cruiser type seat. I used the skinny seats for years, and I never knew just how uncomfortable they were. You can add a gel cover to that if you have sensitive bum-bum, but it's really not necessary.

Do they make a cruiser seat with a taint cutout? That would be optimal cheeky.

Answered my own question...there you go

Get the fattest, softest seat you can. Seriously!

Fatter is better.

I used this one last year with great success.

I went through 5 bicycle seats last year before I finally found one that my hip would tolerate.

It is 13-3/4" across and it works (for me anyway).

At $69.95, they are not cheap. But, after using mine on the playa last year, I would have paid much-much more for the riding-all-day comfort.

The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair.

Whatever seat you choose, install a stuffed animal on it for added comfort! (and style) :D

Thrift store fluffy, slit the critter's belly open (no beads, just foam), slide over the seat and Voila! Instacomfort!
(and a recognizable ride in a sea of bikes) 8)

Seats will only do so much. Right now is when you should be riding around as much as possible to build up your ass callouses. :D

To quote FIgjam "don't buy ur burn, build ur burn"

To put it in the context of this thread, don't worry about finding the poshest, comfiest, most lavish bike seat money can buy. It can't be that hard to do a search on the internet for bike seats and find a few options, look for something that's both reasonably priced and seems fairly comfortable, and then make it into the most comfortable (and awesome-looking) bike seat you could ever want for. You could go as low tech as a throw pillow and duct tape, or get fancy and get some pillow stuffing or foam and some fabric (if you really want to splurge, go to a fabric store and find something you really think is cool). Tiger stripes, zebra spots, psychedelic colors... or a zillion other options.

The best seat you can buy without any kind of supplemental cushion cover won't be as comfortable as the worst seat you can buy that has one, IMO. Get the shape you like most, then add your own style and comfort.
