I really took tamarakays post to you jovancat as concern not lecturing. Just concern...as you are so concerned

So TaramaCee can be concerned but I can't be? All my posts here are out of concern.
Also there is such a thing as concern trolling. I think that may be more along the lines of what TC was doing.

I really did think this thread would end with my "Welcome to ePlaya, read the information on the website!" post.
Family...look what sparr is doing to us, this dusty deathzorb is tearing us apart! You're all awesome people!

You're just really taking it to a whole new level though. Really. Lots of dangerous stuff out there at BRC and you've been busting sparrs chops quite a lot over something you really have no control over. I'm pretty sure sparrs is not an idiot, zorbs do cost money, you need some space to play in one... Pretty sure he'll have it secured when not in use and will play with it out on the open playa where there is a lot of space.
Oh my god, it's HUGE!

Re: How much will playa dust scratch clear vinyl (a zorb)?
That's an awful lot of assuming you're doing there Luccy and you know that they say about that right?
Again it's not the stuff that's dangerous, it's what idiots do with it. And I may not have any control but Sparr will and he genuinely seems to lack an understanding of how his failure to exercise that control could affect others. Honestly his responses here are bordering on sociopathic
Also I do think Sparr is an idiot. Like I said I've seen his posts on Reddit as well as here and they all lead me to conclude that he is deadly serious in this lack of comprehension of how his actions could have an effect on someone else.
There are three options here.
1. Sparr is a troll and he is giggling to himself with every post I make. I'm actually ok with this. I'm too sick to be at the temple build site or in our camp workshop so taking his posts at face value and replying as such is keeping me from going insane thinking about all the things I wish I was able to be doing.
2. He's an idiot and genuinely doesn't understand how physics works. In which case I'd like to stay positive that he can be educated and become a functioning and contributing member of our community
3. He's a sociopath and straight up does not care if his toy hurts people. Actually this is a new idea and if it is the case then yeah, there probably isn't anything that can be done except maybe warn folk to stay the fuck away from him. But I think the chances of this being the case are pretty slim.

That will be yet another example of your reading comprehension coming up short, then. My "no" was to your "please answer them", which I hoped to make clear by once again quoting the part of your message that I was replying to. I feel like I've wandered into some twilight zone where common internet communication strategies mean the opposite of what they do everywhere else.Jovankat wrote:I'll just take that as a "no" to all my questions then.sparr wrote:No. I am not going to discuss anything further in this thread that isn't about playa dust scratching clear vinyl. I will not be contributing to this horrible derailment of the thread any further.Jovankat wrote:I'm going to ask a couple of simple questions of you now, please answer them as precisely as you expect your questions to be answered for the information to be worthy of your consideration.

This one is probably the closest. Let me be explicit:Jovankat wrote:3. He's a sociopath and straight up does not care if his toy hurts people. I do care if my toy hurts people.
I also care about providing smart, responsible people with a toy (or tool) they can make safe decisions about how to enjoy (or use), if they choose to do so.
I might care about the latter more than the former.
For this same reason, I would also lend my nail gun to people, or my ladder, or my laser pointer [in previous years], or my motor vehicle, or any of a thousand other things that someone might use in an unsafe fashion. I will be sad if someone shoots you with my nail gun. I will be sad if someone tips my ladder over onto your yurt. I will be sad if someone blinds you with my laser pointer. I will be sad if someone drives my car into your camp or your person. Despite how sad any of these situations will make me, that won't stop me from giving other people the opportunity to responsibly use those things (although for the car I might check if they have a driver's license. I'm not sure about BLM policy or NV law on that front).
PS: Still annoyed at the mods for closing threads, and the rest of you for shitty netiquette. I've given up on talking about playa dust and vinyl, since no one in this thread wants to talk about that, and the jeep vinyl windows thread got closed.

This has been 5 pages of people telling you the same thing, yet you continue to stare off into space expecting some sparkly answer.
Why don't you just come out and tell everyone what you want to hear, and they will type it for you.

Re: How much will playa dust scratch clear vinyl (a zorb)?
Sparr, no one has closed a thread of yours.
A mod has merged the jeep thread with the zorb thread into this single thread, presumably because you asked essentially the same question twice.
Your blanket statement about our 'universal' shitty netiquette is inaccurate.
You have received many informative, friendly, useful posts answering your questions and expressing concerns.
Your shitty netiquette is showing.
I'm curious, do you have difficulty playing nice with other people in the real life sandbox, or does this only manifest on discussion boards?

Re: How much will playa dust scratch clear vinyl (a zorb)?
Actually, we did lock them for a day while we discussed them. They were then reopened with the jeep & zorb threads merged, as they were about the same thing, and the philosophy thread about personal responsibility on its own. Sparr may be as annoyed as he likes about that, we are a free society. But when you cross-post, which is one of the things we frown on, you run the risk of having your threads merged, locked, or pulled.gaminwench wrote:Sparr, no one has closed a thread of yours.

Thank you, mods, for discussing our communities' questionable behavior and working together to enforce the community standards in our board's best interests.
And for being transparent about your decisions.
Sparr, threads locked temporarily for moderation, then reinstated in a conflated thread.
Not closed.

You say I asked the same question twice, and yet I must not have, since the other thread actually had useful on-topic answers about static attraction and dust buildup that I was never able to get anyone to provide here.gaminwench wrote:Sparr, no one has closed a thread of yours.

Yeah? I count maybe three, out of 100+ posts in this thread. The vast majority of this thread are people who want to talk about safety. The 3(?) that actually answer my original question were helpful, and I'd have loved to delve further into their answers, if not for the huge amount of background noise.gaminwench wrote:Your blanket statement about our 'universal' shitty netiquette is inaccurate.

Question: "how much will playa dust scratch clear vinyl (a zorb)"
Answer: "Lots"
As part and parcel of that answer, the community suggests you rethink bringing it for a myriad of health and safety and practical reasons, all well-expressed.

Like the people who say the wind speed changes "fast" or "unexpectedly", you probably think you're being helpful and answering my question, but you're not. I have no idea what "lots" means to you, any more than I know what "fast" means to those people (seconds? minutes? hours?). If you're going to give a relative answer, at least make it relative TO something? I don't need physics-lab-quality opacity and dispersion measurements here. I'd be happy with "more than beach sand, less than concrete" (if that's actually an accurate answer).GreyCoyote wrote:Question: "how much will playa dust scratch clear vinyl (a zorb)"

Re: How much will playa dust scratch clear vinyl (a zorb)?
You have already been told that the idea of a zorb is bad. Isn't it a moot point to find out how much or how fast it will get scratched up?
Anyway, considering an average use of 5 hours per day, the vinyl will be scratched as soon as the zorb starts rolling on the playa (probably at a rate comparable to fine beach sand). As the week progresses, it will get worse and worse. By the end of the week, that zorb will be semi-transparent even after washing it. On the other hand, playa dust will stick to it the moment you roll it on the playa. The zorb will be covered in dust in just a few hours of use rendering it semi-opaque.
Hopefully now that you have the answer you can put this idea to rest.
Enjoy your first burn without worrying about the superfluous stuff and without burning too many bridges on your way there.
