Full disclosure, I don't yet have a past Burn under my belt, nor do I have a ticket to the 2015 Burn. However, I thought I'd introduce myself to the community now as I'm confident that at some point in the future, I will be able to pick up a ticket. Essentially, I feel that I'm the monkey in the Infinite Monkey Theorem who is finally typing the complete works of Shakespeare.

At any rate, I've read through the First Timer's Guide, as well as the Preparation listings each year, for many years now, so I feel like I've got the manual well in hand.

As far as introductions go, I am a creator first and foremost.
I love working with my mind as well as my hands.
I strive to live beautifully, and love beautifully.
The three personal traits that I value most high are Wisdom, Bravery and Love.
I treat life as an ongoing artwork.
I will entertain any conversation on philosophy, deep thought and religion regardless of people's POV's.
I still don't understand why we need politics, and frankly, the whole topic bores me.
I inherited an aspect of my grandfather's soul when he died on the day of my birth.
I've satisfied about 2/5 of my soul's purpose, and am constantly striving to satisfy the rest.
I look forward to becoming enlightened, in my own time.
I feel like I can see most of the signs.
All in all, I think I'm heading in the right direction.

Not sure what else to say at this point. I look forward to crossing paths with many of you in the future.

Good luck with your ticket.

Get your time off, tell everyone you know that you're looking, make your shopping and packing lists, meet local Burners (Burners prefer to sell to friends and acquaintances because they are less likely to scalp) and do all of that fine Due Diligence. That way when the call comes, you're ready.

When I put it that way, it sounds less and less like luck and more like a project. I guess that's true!

(A lot of people don't do any of that, and when they DO find out there's a ticket available, they don't know where to start, and have to pass. The horror!)

Hi Savannah,

Excellent tips, I greatly appreciate them.

I've got the time off, and I've been internally prepping on and off since attempting to participate in 2014. I even started stripping / modding my cruiser bike to become a solid Playa transport vehicle.

Next, I'll start getting connected with local Burners in the Portland area.

To that end, if there are any folks out there that reside in the Portland area, holler! I'd love to catch up and further involve myself in this community.

Latest update, I've got my transport vehicles secured:
- 4x4 from Portland to Playa
- Cruiser bike (dubbed "Marla") for intra-Playa travel

Also, I've thrown and glazed a series of ceramic pieces that I'll be bringing down as gifts for fellow Burners. Just some simple vessels (cups and chalices) made with clay found around my cabin up on Mt. Hood. Clear glaze to show off the unique earth up there.

Still looking for a ticket, however, I'm focusing more on getting these accoutrements for the experience ready in hopes that the ticket comes through last minute.

Great to hear that. I'm also looking forward to setting up a station at my camp for some type-based temporary tattoos.

I love typography and have some skin-friendly ink that I've used at other festivals. People really seem to respond well to being able to express literally some of their current feelings / moods as written out on their external skin.

Welcome welcome. It is a great first experience. My first burn was burning man. I spent so little time at my camp trying to see everything and always forgetting to take pictures. Don't forget the sunscreen. I got a burn at both on my back both times!

How well does the "1 gallon / person / day" rule hold up at Burning Man? That's usually what I shoot for when packing for other festivals / camping excursions / expeditions, etc.

I would assume that the dry weather may necessitate more, so I may just pack for that.

Also, I notice that everyone has special goggles, assuming this is for the Playa dust. Would old mountaineering glasses with leather side eye protection be sufficient?

Sometimes 1.5 gallons per day is safer, but if you have supplemental beverages with you, aren't washing dishes and aren't showering every day (or are cleaning with a spray bottle and baby wipes or other water-economical means) you could make it work with as little as a gallon a day. That's what used to be the standard.

If they have good UV protection they would make good sunglasses (which you will need) but they will probably not keep out all the dust (the dust is as fine as baby powder).

You may wish to have a pair of the above for everyday use + something that seals to the face for whiteouts--snowboarder goggles, motorcycle goggles, or GI issue military wind/dust goggles, for example. (I use the latter, and the pair I have came with one dark lense and one clear. Very handy!)

Pro tip, re pack your ice into freezer bags. This way it won't create a mess in your cooler and you can use the melt to drink.
