Early Days Only -- How to Catch a Reno Flight on Thursday?

Post by Shell » Fri Jul 17, 2015 1:18 pm

So my friend has talked me into coming to Burning Man even though I'm already scheduled to fly out for Labor Day elsewhere...

The problem is, before I can reschedule my flight to fly out of Reno, I need to make sure I can GET to it first -- and almost everybody there is looking to leave Friday at the earliest!

Is anyone planning on leaving BM early enough that I can catch a flight coming out of Reno by 1pm (or earlier!) Thursday?

Bonus points if there's a solution that doesn't cost much / require me to leave my trip-specific luggage in a locker somewhere...

Try posting on https://rideshare.burningman.org/...yes, Thursday is early, but I'm sure you're not the only one needing to leave then.
The playa isn't "home" to anything or anyone, it's not magic, it's just a goddamm camping trip. A really awesome one. -Captain Goddammit

On-playa, Playa Info is a good place to look for rideshares.
When he lights his streetlamp, it is as if he brought one more star to life, or one flower.
When he puts out his lamp, he sends the flower, or the star, to sleep.
That is a beautiful occupation.

It is not cheap, but there are commercial flights from the Black Rock City Galactic Spaceport (the on-playa airport). They fly over the unpredictable traffic delays. But they are limited on weight.

Right now that's looking like my only option... are there other boards to ask about this besides the rideshare link given above? Even on there, I'm only seeing a whole lot of requests and not a lot of offers...

Hi! Did you find a ride? I have a similar situation. Need to leave Thursday to Reno airport to catch a flight that date. I can help with gas or rental car price? Or if you found a solution could you guide me in the right direction?

Search eplaya (using google).

This has been covered before, and again this year. Both in getting a ride from BRC to Reno during the week (rideshare and playa info mentioned above too), and in getting to Reno in time for a flight. Read the many suggestions, with how-tos, pros and cons. Worst case: there's always someone leaving BRC; hold a sign on the road out of BRC.

As there are a number of events that can be out of your control for leaving the playa and getting to Reno on the same day in time for a flight (rain closing playa traffic, highway road failure/accident-closure, arranged ride doesn't show, etc.), the past consensus is that you must leave the playa the day before your flight, overnight in Reno, then catch your flight. If your flight is late in the day, then perhaps a very early morning BRC exit will work. Or it rains and you could be stuck on-playa for a day or two.

If your flight is that early plan on leaving on Weds. I would bet actual cash that getting a ride on Thursday that guarantees you'll be in Reno by that time would be slim to none. Especially since they'd have to leave the playa by 4-5am.
