My homemade shower

Post by jfeaz » Fri Jul 17, 2015 1:48 pm

I just wanted to post a picture of the shower I just built - I'm really excited about testing it out! It's based on a great design by Hoolie I saw in this thread:

viewtopic.php?f=277&t=70199&hilit=shower

I couldn't find a decent pallet for the base, so I made it with fresh lumber. The total cost is about $140 estimated after getting cool bulk fabric to finish the walls.

I can't wait to bathe luxuriously on the Playa :D

Whats your collection/disposal plan for the water?
The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair.

Nice. Now all you need to do is trade that sun shower in for one of these:

(Of course you'll need a pump and a 25 gallon water container, but it is so worth it.)

It'll be elevated with loose blocks of 2x4 at the corners and placed in a 9x10 evap pond, which will be very effective for a camp with only 8 people. Also secured to the ground with guylines tied around the top horizontal PVC pieces.

Oh hell yes! I want to improve this thing a little every year, and I think you've given me the 2016 project.

When you're ready, let me know and I can give you all the specs on the pump and how we connect ours.

That'd be great! If you have the info handy, might as well post it here now for the public good.

Would love to see some pics of your set too if you have them.

This is the pump we use

We bought it a few years back and according to the receipt we paid $169.99 buying local at a marine store.

I don't think I have any pictures of the hookup although our shower looks a lot like yours except yours looks a bit bigger than ours. (4'x4') I'll try (again) to remember to take some picks of it this year on playa or maybe when we start taking everything out of storage and start testing pre-burn.

Oh, and ours is shorter. We have a two room yurt, one with standard 4' walls which is for sleeping only (and it has AC :)) the other has 6' walls, so we adjusted the height to fit inside that yurt. The nicest thing about the setup is you can take a hot shower any time day or night.

You just have to be careful to monitor your usage. Especially if you use an evap pond, or you'll be chasing down one of those pump trucks out there.

Sounds like a very cool setup. I'd love to see a bigger picture of your yurt as well and any info you might have posted about building them.

And my shower base is 4 x 3.5. The vertical PVCs are 6 feet.

I do have some pictures of the double. I think the one in my sig might have been the first or second year we used a yurt and it was only a single.

Here's probably the most comprehensive thread about Yurts on eplaya.

That is wicked. Fabric helps make it. Have you considered painting the tubing?

Thank you! I came across your post when I decided to look after browsing some really boring and cramped-looking prefab camp shower enclosures. I'm glad I did.

Definitely. Probably a 2016 project. Or maybe I'll commission someone on the Playa = )

That pump is a standard RV or marine water pump. If you're a scrounger you can get one a hell of a lot cheaper from someone parting out an old trailer or camper.

Embedded here is the take on grey water disposal: http://burningman.org/event/preparation ... ray-water/

Dim view of evaporation ponds. YMMV.
