Getting There, and General Advice

Post by oliv897 » Sun Jul 19, 2015 8:14 pm

So I've looked about a bit and can't find any flights to anywhere in Nevada.. well except Las Vegas but due to passed problems I wanna stay well away from there.. I was told to look for flights to somewhere called Reno (O.o wanders if that's pre-war New Reno) but can't find any out of the UK... the closest I can get is San Francisco but alas there's my problem.. I don't drive.. I'm 7'4 in RL and find it extremely difficult to fit in the little cars they train you in so have not bothered learning.. I presume there's a bus or something into the desert? (Cage The Elephants, Aint no rest for the wicked starts to play in my mind)

I also wanted to ask since I'm no stranger to labor and of course really have no way to transport anything I'd call artistic that I do am I allowed to turn up a week before the gates open to offer myself up as free work to anyone that needs help setting stuff up (i'm also terminally ill so if I can help you by doing anything super unsafe let me know haha, hey if you can't laugh at your disease what can you do?)

Well those are my 2 concerns..

The answer to one of your questions is easy, no you cannot show up early unless you have an early entry pass.
There is a bus service called Green Tortoise that runs from Reno. Getting there from anywhere else will be difficult.

you will not find any flights to Reno from overseas. Fly to Sacramento, SF or Seattle or Portland. Buy your separate ticket from one of the airlines separately if needed to go to Reno (RNO) from any of the aforementioned cities.

It's a bit late in the game to look for early access. Early Access is almost entirely reserved for theme camps and official Burning Man staff. Theme camps, by now, most likely have their EA's dialed away and a plan in place. You cannot join staff as a first year, generally, so that's out of the window too. I would not count on finding an EA pass this late in the game, but I've seen stranger things. Don't try, is my advice, especially as a first timer.

As for getting there, you probably want to fly in to Reno or San Francisco and take the Burner Express bus. Here is their schedule and pricing:

https://burnerexpress.burningman.org/sc ... nd-prices/

Ticketing for them and such is there, as well. You're going to need a healthy amount of planning to get it all done. I'm not well versed in flying in, since I've lived close to the Burn my whole life, so any advice I could give from here would be nearly useless.

There is also the option of actually landing at the BRC airport. Dunno if that interests you, but if you ghost some of the aviation groups out there, you may be able to hook up with a pilot who is coming in and hitch a ride.

Good on ya for planning early!

There is indeed an airport, albeit a temporary one. 88NV is the FAA designator, and its off the 5 o'clock radial way out to the trash fence.

If this appeals to you, work out the transportation details early (you have a year, so you're good there).

They haven't yet announced exactly where in San Francisco the bus will leave from .. Do you guys know where it left from in past years, so I can get a rough idea ?

JP, Welcome to eplaya. We are your best sourse of info but we are not wikipedia. A little bit of self reliance is called for before everyone wil take their time to answer you. Use this search tool site:eplaya.burningman.org then leave a space and type in what you want to read about. For instance Burner Express Bus 2014. Search through google and then come back for us to fill in the blanks. Good luck. There are several wonderful threads here to take you through your journey start to finish.

If you're terminal illness doesn't get in the way of that.

Hi all
Myself and friend are going to burning man with green tortious, we was hoping to get in contact with people travling with them. We have been traveling for 10months and getting all our burner stuff in san franscisco. We was wondering if any one wanted to share cost of big tent or had any spare room for us, or just meet up in San Fransciso before.

Does the BRC Airport have the equivalent of the "D lot" for those who try to arrive early, or are they checked out by radio as they approach and denied landing privileges if their tickets aren't in order?

No snark intended here, but that line got a belly laugh from me and had me wondering "Is Green Tortious the Green Lanterns evil twin?"

Sorry. Lawyer joke... I'll shut up now.

Someone was telling me their "WORST EVER place I slept" story, and my expression was gradual bemusement as they described this flaky, smelly hostel that was eventually outed as part of the same Green Tortoise chain we all know. It was strange to see a company that most people generally say is "doing it right" on the playa, pictured as the sleaziest option for an overnight stay in Seattle.

You really don't want to share a tent with folks you don't know.
