thanks. I asked because my brother has bad knees he found one on ebay cheap and it was local pick up only well I am only 2 hours away so why not bother your brother to spend the whole day picking it up packing it and shipping it. Well I took the time to learn to ride it and realized he was very very lucky they are expensive to repair.
There is a learning curve like riding a bike so a rental would be good if you had the time to practice I was doing ok within a hour but to be dodging people on the playa might be a bit more skill level than you can get in a few hours.

The absolute best equipment investment that I made for my first burn was the addition of an electric motor kit for my tricycle.

Since I am a pilot (who drove and did not fly in) Camping at the airport was, for me, the logical place for me to camp and to volunteer at for my first burn. Although I was not flying, being able to speak "Pilotese" gave me an instant family and enabled me to function as a volunteer in what at times can be a rather complicated and very rule regulated camp environment.

By the airport being located 2.75 miles from the temple, walking or even biking the 5.5 miles can be a bit problematic and exploring the nooks and crannies for any extended period of time can be rather a taxing experience for the body whether it be walking or peddling.

However, I could hop on my trike and in a few minutes I could venture as far and as long as my fanny could hold out. My optional 20a 36v lithium ion battery was well worth the extra money. After riding all day and a good part of the evening, only one time did I run out of battery power and that time I was within 100 yds. of being back at the airport.

On several occasions, I loaded a passenger onto the ice chest in my back basket and my motor was able to pulled (as effortlessly as I could determine), not only me, but a small ice chest full of ice & drinks and the weight of a second person.

My battery came with a rather slow charging 3a charger. The dealer explained to me that he could have supplied a faster charging unit, but with the faster charge, the whole life of the battery would be greatly diminished. With the 3a charger, my battery is supposed to be able to be recharged 1,000+ times.

Before I went to bed, I would plug my charger into my quiet 2000i generator and when I awoke in the morning my battery is fully charged. I asked several folks who were camping rather close by if my generator bothered them. All three camps did not even know that my generator was running.

Based in my experience, I can say that having an electric tricycle gave me the latitude to see what I wanted to see, do what I wanted to do, stop when I wanted to stop with a built-in chair, and for as long as I wished without any ware and tear on the body.

If you are considering adding a electric kit to your bike or trike, my experience indicates to me that the purchase of a quality up-market kit (rather that a less expensive kit) and the optional lithium ion battery for my trike was well worth the extra expense for no other reason than having an extended running time and a motor that was 100% dependable.

I'm just checking in on the status of my tricycle. It works!

Thanks to Elliot's help (and help from a friend of his who lives in Santa Cruz) the bike runs on pedal power. It's geared super super super easy so it's easy to ride at 1mph by pedal power even up a small hill!

The electric wheel chair motors work great and seem to be pretty zippy too! I think the thing will hit just about exactly 5mph on the playa at about 50% of the throttle maximum. I think I can push it to 7 or 8mph if I let it go 100% on flat ground. The electrical system is nice and clean with two "brains" for the system. One in the rear as close to the battery pack as possible to make all the high amperage connections, and one in the steering column area where all the low amperage connections go on. It has lights and will meet all the DMV requirements necessary. The motor controller actually runs on a 24v to 60v kit I purchased from a local company (they sell online) and it's really easy to install. If anybody has an electric bicycle with a good motor and everything else is broken, message me. I've done all the hard work of testing this thing and it seems to work great so far. I plan to put a spare into my electric bicycle so that I have a set of identical motor controls in the event something happens to the tricycle system!

My wife Pam and I are in the midst of decorating it to look like a fruit fly. It is already coming along nicely. It also has a nice stout battery box (3/4" plywood!) and a nice padded seat.

So far the only problem I've come across is the battery pack. I got the battery "pack" for free on Freecycle and they are all past their prime. They were once some killer batteries (68AH gel batteries) but a combination of age and abuse killed them. They all give 12+ volts when fully charged, but only 2 of them can sustain over 12v with even a minor load (0.1A for my head and tail lights!)....They drop below 10 when the motors kick on. With only 2 "good" batteries and 2 "useless" batteries, I'll need to find an alternative. What kinds of batteries do people around here use? Remember, I will use this thing at Burning Man, mAaaaaayyybe a few hours elsewhere, but mostly Burning Man. I want something cheap enough for the playa but that will last at least a couple of burns if I put a battery tender on it in the off season. I am already planning to charge this thing for 8+ hours per day when in camp or sleeping, but I hope to get at least 2 hours per day of use out of it. Day time it's only going to drain while I'm riding it. Night time will probably be closer to 2 hours on motor and 4 of drain time due to the lights. I'm estimating between 5 and 10A for the lights when they are on. I think the motors are 200 watt each, so 400 watt total, and rounding up for a little extra, lets say 600 watt total when the motors are running (24v motors, btw). Maybe 24A for the motors when they are both running at 100%..... That gives me:

2H*24A=48AH (Day time)
2H*24A+4H*10A=88AH (Tight time)

The 24A drain will drain faster from a deep cycle battery.... but anyway, I think that means I need to find about 150AH worth of deep cycle batteries wired at 24v (two 12v in series)... I prefer to actually have 300AH of deep cycle batteries but that's probably out of my budget. Does anyone else want to check my math? This stuff is all new to me and at this point I'm considering actually buying items for my battery setup. I want to get the cheapest but best options for my batteries. Could I get away with 4 really cheap deep cycle batteries from NAPA or whoever for my ~200 cycle maximum application? Getting 4-5 years out of really well maintained deep cycle batteries will be pretty hard and I know that these aren't going to be well maintained... Realistically the batteries will last 3 years and then they will start to fail in some way... That means they are going to be used for about 6 hours per day for about 30 days and then be dead..... Nobody ever said Burning Man was sustainable... right?

Oh, a side note and additional question: Can I use a 24v sealed lead acid battery charger to charge two 12v "flooded cell" batteries wired correctly for 24v? In other terms, can I use my 6A charger that came with the wheel chair I harvested for this project and charge two cheap car batteries when I'm back in camp? Will it kill the batteries? I can find plenty of Auto parts stores in my area selling "Dual Purpose" batteries that should give me the 160RC (ball park, 90 Ah) battery life I need per battery, assuming my calculations are right.... But hopefully my battery charger is up for the task. Those suckers are expensive!

BTW, I know my math on my previous post was a little too ideal. I know AH ratings are for 20 hours and typically for lower amps. I'm running at 10-34A depending on the tricycle configuration and load.... It's going to be rough on the battery. I'm tempted to just go out and buy 4 "nice" dual purpose batteries from one of the auto parts stores around town and cross my fingers.

My 105 AH AGM batteries are on their 6th year and are still doing fine.

The battery experts that I've talked to say I can expect 10 yrs. of service if I don't discharge below 50%, and keep them on a maintainer when not in use. 8)

it is up to you

the scooter got playafried
the trike was extra electric motor scary weird
and years ago the segue disappeared

Every year I try something new. I have spent years where half the burn is in camp tinkering with an art car trying (desperately) to make it meet inspection. I have backup plans for the tricycle, but half the fun for me is trying something totally new and totally unreasonable just because I can. For me at least, the year I stop going to Burning Man to experiment with something far out of my world is the year I stop going to Burning Man.

Anyway, I've got a lot of backup plans if this thing gets there and it breaks. I'm just crossing my fingers it doesn't break.

Finished my electric trike install today. Took it out on the county roads near my house and got up to 19 MPH with it, Obviously, that far exceeds the playa speed limit. But it has gobs of torque and gets up to any reasonable speed quickly and doesn't slow down much with the 50 ft elevation change on my route. Li-ion battery meter never moved after 5 miles of flat out driving. I will probably haul an ice chest in mine to gift cold drinks in my travels out to deep playa. Look for The Sheik!
