Anyone else hate videos and photos?

Post by Hope-a-Lope » Wed Jul 22, 2015 4:00 pm

I'm not against taking (some) photos and videos, and I love perusing my own every so often.

The rest, I can't fucking stand. But I don't know why.

I'm not opposed to a little cheese (I think "Oh the Places You'll Go" is actually kinda cute). I think about TTITD all year, and love working on projects and outfits and going to burner events. I'm far from jaded, and I don't think cameras should be banned altogether.

But any time some compilation video, or photo album, or even 30sec casual phone video comes my way on the internet, I actively ignore it. I do an involuntary eye-roll and move on. I just want nothing to do with other people's media.

But I don't know why.

Anyone else?

Agree

And not just Playa related.

I completely abandoned social media junk like Facebook and Twitter the moment they started the automatic play embedded videos.

I've never seen the famous ones. Am I missing something great? Nah. I avoid them also. I will be bringing a camera this year and plan to use it. Imagine trying to talk to your mate about this with no photos. (My husband doesn't burn.)

There's some guy selling his "documentary" on iTunes. It focuses on him taking his parents to BM.

So, he wants me to pay $10 to watch him take his parents to BM? No thanks.

I think there's a setting to turn that off. I don't remember where to find it, but I'm assuming there must be one and I found it at one time because my videos no longer start streaming unless I mouse over them, and the volume is always on mute.

I hate, HATE the videos of Burning Man with jump cuts, no natural sound and some goddamn EDM slapped on top. Seems those are the ones that always make the rounds. I do enjoy the videos that are more like home movies, with people talking or the videographer walking around the playa and whatnot. I guess I blanche at the easy slickness we all have access to with iMovie and other such video software. That, and the more goddamn Youtube hits these videos get, the harder tickets are to come by. I'm looking at you, "Oh The Places You'll Go." I really disliked that one, even before it racked up millions of views.

This is my situation too, my first burn; and without my husband.

He's super supportive of me going. Just isn't his thing, and you know what I'm glad he's got his boundaries. I'm happy to venture out on my own the first time. I just can't articulate my experiences as well as a photograph (yet!)

I like the videos that have the regular sound in them not the dubbed over EDM. The videos from Mark Day are my favorites and I also like the stoned pink Jesus infomercials too. I've watched them all at least once.

Guess I'm not too jaded yet......LOL

I watched as many videos as I could my virgin year & when I got to the Playa it was like "Hey, where are all the cute women on ecstasy. Why am I not laid yet" (Kidding!) (kind of)

I enjoy most of the videos I've seen but I also blame them for the increased popularity of the event & ticket scarcity. I know it's only natural to show the glamorous side of Burning Man but where are the videos of standing in line for hours at Will Call, & the inside of the porto's on Saturday night, the unrelenting wind & dust? To be fair every video of young beautiful women hooping in bikini's should be offset with a middle-aged guy in not so good of shape wearing a lace tutu, just a tutu. I have nothing against out of shape middle aged guys in tutu's but I'm just say'n...

During the dead of winter I really enjoy watching a few videos to take me back Home. I also like to see all the cool stuff that I missed on the Playa. There is so much to see & it's impossible to see it all (in person). I have mixed feelings about drones on the Playa, but some of the drone videos are spectacular.

I worked perimeter for ASM last year & since I was facing the crowd the whole time I would never have gotten to see the show if it weren't for the videos.

So in all, even though many paint an unrealistic & glamorized version of Burning Man & I feel have contributed to the overall popularity of the event, I rather like the videos.

For the record, I don't care for the self absorbed selfie stick videos.

I'm not sure why either but I hate watching most of the videos. I refused to watch "oh the places you'll go" A few of the time lapse ones have been pretty cool, and I like seeing the really well done shots of the large scale art.

Totally agree. Sure, I love seeing all the beautiful people on the playa, when I'm there. But that's such a tiny aspect of Burning Man, yet it's practically all that's featured in these videos, and I do think it contributes to the EDC-ification of the event, as more and more people want to come expecting a daisy carnival filled with young hot bodies and endless EDM. And it's turning into a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I think the only course of action at this point is to launch a YouTube blitz of shirtcocker videos.

That's a good point and I correct my statement above to reflect it. I, too, work a large burn and would never get to see it without YouTube videos after the event. Kinda sad being so close to the thing and not getting to see all your hard work! Oh well, as long as it burns I'm happy. The drone footage afterwards is a nice treat though.
