We are going through our playa clothing bins. More and more my playa cloths are my default world clothing. We have a stack of stuff to donate to our villages Barbie Boutique. Someone get's to snag some pretty nifty men's jackets and pants.

No. This monstrously big tent is not coming with me. I'm a sucker for a free tent. It's 12 by 20 and I'm going to use it as a sorting room. OK. Everything out of the hut and chicken coop. Now.

Re: 2015 one item a day for BM list..
Confirmed visits with friends in Chicago and Ohio.
Finally sat down and mapped things out including a day in Moab/Valley of the Gods (thanks Antim!) and made a few hotel reservations two of which were freebies with rewards (technically I was short by 13 points on one and had to buy 1000 points for $11.00). I'll be taking 50 in both directions.
Got my car back after having my neighbor/mechanic check things out: the check engine light I "fixed" with electrical tape to the dash was a faulty exhaust sensor, oil change, fuel filer, new tire and alignment. If the damned car wasn't so reliable I might be hesitant about taking a vehicle with over 100k miles on a cross country trip, but it is and I'm not.
Ordered a new tent, the old one is fine but I'm tired of crawling in and out. This one is a 5 person so I'll have more room but I need to see how it fits under the MH and whether I should covert the shade flap into an elongated MH. The old one will come with me just in case.
Put the generous WF gift card I got for doing my job with my ticket and VP. I will put this to good use primarily in the cheese section in Reno. The Reno Wf is super Burner friendly and only a hop skip and a jump from TJs. That and a jar of peanut butter and some crackers will be my sustenance for the week. I'm leaving the stove and one cooler and all that goes with it home this year. I'm tired of forcing myself to cook/eat when 'm not in the mood just because I feel obligated because I brought it. Which also means I probably won't be doing Savemart this year either.
I'll be lugging a bike from the East Coast which is good in that I can customize it a bit (I have a great idea I just have to figure out how to execute). I'll probably use the bike rack until I get to Reno and then throw it up top for the trip to BRC, I can't be bothered with moving/lighting the plate.
Yeah, It's more than one thing but apart from buying the ticket and picking up a couple of things at a thrift earlier in a year I haven't done jack shit by way of prep

SicPup it sounds like you're on top of everything. I admire you leaving your stove and cooler at home. But....No cold beer? No instant coffee at odd hours? No hot soup or cup o noodles.I don't cook but I boil a mess a water.

Re: 2015 one item a day for BM list..
Back from OCF and that means that I am almost packed for the burn! LOL Trial run of some new lighting and I decided that my new white faux fur coat will not be making the trip to the playa this year. I am just not ready to sacrifice it to the dust gods. My old dusty trusty grey will have to make due once again. I did pick up some neat star shaped LED battery lights and I am going to figure out how to sew them on my collar and a little pocket somewhere to hold the battery pack. I considered putting them on the bottom of the coat but I sit on it when riding a bike at night and that would probably not be good. Grey is such a bland color to light up.

Sounds like a good plan, danibel... white may be easier to light up than gray, but it probably wouldn't stay white for too long. Hooray for fun lighting, though.
Wow, sic pup, that sounds like some epic level planning and one hell of a journey coming together!
I got my playa vodka sorted out, woohoo! A sale at the place resulted in in big bottles of the really posh stuff being only a buck a bottle of the better grade stuff I normally get, so hooray for that!

FIVE...
FEET!!!
My monkey hut will be 12'x20' this year. I just finished the additional 5' of shade cloth. Only thing left is a 5' PVC section for the spine. That's just a glue job.
Last year I realized that with my tent and shit there was minimal comfortable space for relaxing in. Not that it mattered to me much, as I was usually reclining in LOS of the potty doors and enjoying the ambience and passers-by. But it was when I was interviewed last year that I would have liked a more comfortable place to entertain visitors. Five feet will be plenty.
So tickled!

Thanks for the well-wishing, folks.
The mailcarrier attempted to deliver my co-pilot's ticket when co-pilot wasn't home. After seeing "you were absent" slip on door, co-pilot used USPS website to request re-delivery on Saturday. The next day, USPS returned package to sender, claiming "address does not exist." *facepalm*
I know it will work out, but we thought we'd managed to avoid will call this year, for once.

Oh no! I had this fear when I went on vacation for a week. The day I left I received the email saying my tickets were packaged and ready to ship. Luckily the person watching my house was home when the postwoman came to deliver. I hope your tickets can be reshipped.BoyScoutGirl wrote:Thanks for the well-wishing, folks.

Re: 2015 one item a day for BM list..
I got what I think will be the last order for signage sent off to the printers. In years past I've just gone to the makerspace I belong to and used their wide format printer, but then I end up having to put them on a thin wood backing, and the signs invariably get mucked up (they're just printouts) and have to be re-printed the following year. So for the ones we re-use, I'm having them printed as vinyl banners. I think that between the cost of the big printer and the wood backing, it's probably a wash against the banners, so woohoo!
Yesterday I also picked up what's called a growler. Who knew these things even existed? I guess they're for the serious crafty brew types, it's a half gallon jug that can be sealed and contain the pressure from the carbonation of beer. I guess the way it works is you can bring one of these babies to your favorite brewpub/craft brewery joint and they'll fill 'er up for just the cost of the beer. Cool idea, though I'm not really a craft brew guy. My sweetie pointed out that it might make for a good idea for my playa cocktails. I'm partial to vodka and vicious chemicals (red bull), and usually will make a couple drinks into a larger closeable water container to take with me when I go out & about in the evening. The problem is that water containers don't generally do that well with the fizzy aspect, and either kind of fail through the week or at most last a year or two before I've got to replace it. Since this growler thing is made for carbonated beverages, it's got much better seals, plus it's a solid metal design with nice insulation layer.

Re: 2015 one item a day for BM list..
The trike and the cargo rack were more weight extending off the back of the little 13' travel trailer than it could take. My young down-the-road-friend Matt and I did test runs Saturday; the trailer sway was dangerous to the extent that my no-sway speed was limited to maximum speed 48-50 mph and even then, the trailer was not very happy.
No amount of tightening of the friction anti-sway device, re-allocation or adding additional internal weight to the inside front of the trailer would solve the problem.
Sunday, I removed the cargo rack, disassembled the trike to its primal parts, stored the individual trike parts on the take-down dinette table/bed on the inside rear of the trailer. Matt and I made the same run down the Interstate - problem solved. The trailer is again as steady as a rock, even at 75 mph which is faster than I will be driving.
It only took me 18 minutes to dissemble the trike and load the parts inside the trailer. The bright side is that it gave me an opportunity do a proper soap and water wash of all the trike parts, remove all traces of oil & grease (that playa dust likes to build-up on) and apply a coating of dry Teflon lubricant on all the moving parts.

The last of my bits of supplies for my playa swag arrived yesterday. Tomorrow I do a test run since I'm trying a technique for the first time. And either tonight or tomorrow, I'm dragging out my bins and planned gear to do a test pack to check to see what needs to be repaired or replaced. It's getting closer.

Starting a new job on Monday and today found out that my days off for the burn are approved! I only asked for 4 days off, will be driving to Reno Tuesday night, arriving on playa Wednesday. Leaving Monday, for the first time in a few years. I hope the exodus is not a cluster fuck.
Next item on agenda - book hotel rooms. I wanted to try something different from the Sands, but I think the price is so good and it's a known quantity, it's a no brainer.

Where did you find a metal growler? All the ones I've seen have been glass 1/2 gallon or 1 gallon jugs (still with the metal screw-on cap).trilobyte wrote:Since this growler thing is made for carbonated beverages, it's got much better seals, plus it's a solid metal design with nice insulation layer.
Just pulled most of the fishing tackle out of the RV, to make room for burner stuff. And the fridge is still working after 3 continuous weeks of operation! Amazing what a little percussive maintenance can do. But I still have to clean out the Ontario dust to make room for Nevada dust.

I stopped by and got some chain today for the lag bolts. I cut a few links in the store, but it looks like the cutter was a little jagged and maybe did 10 cuts, before I decided to worry about it later. I will see what method works best when I get home and have some time.
I ordered a light saber for my jedi outfit, and got a battery charger to figure out the mah ratings on all my rechargeable batteries. I also got some more eneloop batteries (they can be recharged over 2000 times) from costco on sale this month to replace the batteries in my Canon battery pack which will require some wiring and soldering. If I can get that done, my Canon can take a few thousand shots with one charge. I was gifted a 512mb compact flash card so I can update my firmware on my camera and use memory cards larger than 2gb. If I knock those out, my camera can go all week with no issues. I don't plan on carrying it around that often though.
Tonight is 50 cent thrift store day again and I have almost completed all my outfits, but am still looking for a few things and always find something useful. Need to do some more work on the hexayurt panels and the swamp cooler in the next few days.
Costco has a growler in stock this month. I want to test mine to see how long it keeps stuff cold. I will definitely take mine to the playa.

I made a swag type thing:
Copper pendants etched with ferric chloride; that's my camp's logo. The one on the right I treated with a gas flame to give a patina; the left I painted with some alcohol ink.

Re: 2015 one item a day for BM list..
@apavlin - I got it at a local store in SF. The brand is called 'reduce' from what I could tell on the package.
@bedlamdoll - those are cool!
Other prep continues. I think I pretty much finished the design work for the CNC stuff I need to do - tomorrow I'll make a run to storage to empty out the van and hit a couple lumber yards to source my material and book time on the machines.
Some stuff we ordered a little while ago finally arrived today, too. A new pair of goggles - will replace an aging pair and has a bit more steampunk flair... a little gearsy-wings pin, which I think will work with most any outfit combo and the upcoming airship pilot outfits... a couple recloseable plastic containers that we'll use for Space & Thyme ingredients, and a large round basin that we can use for soaking and cleaning the round metal mesh things. That was the one part of Space & Thyme operations that was a real pain - the mesh round dudes were bigger than the basin to clean them in, which made soaking impossible and we ended up using more water and spending more time scrubbing than we needed to.
I also picked up some replacement bulbs for our van's headlights and license plate lights. Last year we got pulled over entering the city because the bulb by the rear license plate was out. The guy who stopped us was nice enough and it was just a verbal warning with no further hassles, but still nerve-wracking. That, and the headlights are old and not terribly bright. May as well get to them all while I'm at it. So much to do!

Re: 2015 one item a day for BM list..
Oh yeah, a 3D printed magic thing came in today, I'm very excited. A couple years ago we designed a 3D printed pewter-plated steel Eridu charm for ourselves, and as a thank you gift for a fundraiser we did. I loved mine, but my skin did not love the pewter so much. No rash, thankfully, just turned my skin colors. Anyhow, my gf surprised me by making a special version of the thing in brass. It's a bit bigger and bulkier, but wow it really pops in that metal. Hopefully it doesn't end up discoloring my skin, I don't wanna take this off!
Re: 2015 one item a day for BM list..
Trilo, I love copper and brass, and I wear Vulture Chow's pewter cougar claw every day, along with the copper pendants I made last year and this year. I know they oxidize when I sleep or wear them against my skin, and it can discolour the skin.
So, I simply try to remember not to sleep with them on.
On the (ahem) 'rare' occasion that I 'forget', I just polish them up and wash my skin, and we're good to go.
A thin paste of playa dust and water is a decent polish, followed by a light buffing with a soft cloth.

Re: 2015 one item a day for BM list..
I'm up to my eyeballs in personal and camp prep as well as volunteering on someone else's project. AIEEE where has the time gone? Anyway I just found something I think is going to be great at helping me make sure to eat, to eat food I can handle (not allergic too, etc.) and BPA free. I was thinking of a food vacuum system but I really don't want to buy one, who needs another appliance? So I found these boil-in-pouch bags that can be used on their own for boiling, freezing, and even reconstituting dried food. I just ordered ten of them. Maybe this time I'll have fewer stomach problems on Playa:

Naw, not regularly, on occasion I'll have one (or four) but probably not more than once or twice a month Not really a sacrifice. Most of what I drink is room temp, primarily water but if I'm looking for a little alcohol room temp red wine in defaultia. If I feel a sore throat coming in I may grab a hot chocolate or tea but that's once or twice a season No coffee for me, love the taste, tears my belly up, former ulcer sufferer. I'm weird.Ratty wrote: But....No cold beer? No instant coffee at odd hours? No hot soup or cup o noodles.I don't cook but I boil a mess a water.
I got my tent today from Costco, it's the pop up one someone started a thread on. It's a bit flimsy but I'll give it a go (what's the worse that can happen?...bwahaha). I'll securely stake and guy line in but wouldn't attempt it without the MH being the first line of defense (rated at 35MPH). Ill have a backup. The one thing I didn't consider was its folded size, good thing I'm going spartan this year (as much as a solo camper can be self reliant anyway).
BTW - non members can pay a surcharge (it was $4.50 on a $90 order- I tried getting into one the other day but the only thing the lady at the door could say was "58.50 plus tax", I told her I wasn't in the modd to play grab bag and that I wasn't in the habit of buying before seeing. Nasty thing. I refuse to join any club that would ask me to pay sight unseen to be a member. I later found out the only way to beat it is to buy Gift cards on ebay at a slight premium. those slobs they let in. Ferchristesake it's fucking Costco not some hoity toity exclusive buzz to be evaluated and let in boutique. What has this world come to?
I also picked up some light chains I will attempt to affix to some leather vests I;m studding up,
Speaking of which has anyone had any practical experience painting leather? I'm thinking a very light spray of fabric paint but I 'm not sure about the moop factor, I commissioned a friend at work to paint a fabric vest I brought at the thrift but I think she was leaning towards markers.

Re: 2015 one item a day for BM list..
There are a good number of suppliers of leather paint on Google and in a wide range of colors.
What I know about painting leather is that it the painting process is straight forward and the results are pretty much an indication of how steady ones hand is.

Two out of three tickets have made their way to my location, but one ticket is still on its way back to San Fran...it's a start!
This weekend will the time for online purchases and car booking, provided my camp leader gets back to me on whether I got early arrival.

SicPup, We have a leather worker here. Now who is it? Maybe Drawingablank. That's his name, not my mind taking a holiday.

I have some experience painting leather. A lot depends on the type of leather as some tanning methods are oil based and paints don't adhere well. Vegetable tanned leather accepts most paints well but is very stiff. Garment leathers usually won't accept acrylic or latex paints well, however oil / solvent based paints tend to adhere pretty well.Sic Pup wrote: Speaking of which has anyone had any practical experience painting leather? It is best to test it on an obscure area to see how well it bonds.
Savannah: I don't know what it is, but no thread here escapes alive. You'll get 1 or 2 real answers at minimum, occasionally 10 or 12, and then we flog it until it's unrecognizable and you can't get your deposit back.
